exhaust fan challenge: QUIET!!!

haha ok guys. i'm sure this is discussed here somewhere and maybe someone will just direct me there, but....

what is the quietest exhaust fan out there?? i'm thinking of an exhaust fan in the 170-200cfm range...

i hear that vortex is the quietest but i want an in depth investigation into the issue

anybody up to the challenge?

The best way to achieve your goal would be to buy a larger fan a Dayton or a Vortec and run the power to it thru a dimmer switch......the lil' ones depend on high RPM to move the air...with the larger fan and the dimmer you can turn the fan down until it is almost silent.

You should use a 1/4 gasket between the fan and any hard surface Wood/Sheetrock etc.

That should "shut things up a bit"

nice! got a response from the doctor! yeah, that makes good sense about using a larger fan run at lower speeds. less friction = less noise!

thanks for the tip!

currently, i have my quasi-LST grow under a T5 fluoro w/ some 3500k (or whatever the ones that are like the hps spectrum) so i'm not using my squirrel cage fan.

i'll snag a bigger blower and test some stuff to see if i can go back to a HPS situation. here are some pics. this is 1 girl and she's at 20 days into flowering. enjoy!

bagseed so i do not know the strain.

noise levels

did you ever pick up a fan? i'm curious, as i'm in basically the same boat.

what's the noise level of a can fan vs. a dayton (and how does the ducting/carbon filter work with that?) vs. one of those $30 metal inline fans. i have a 3'x3'x6.5' hydro hut, so i don't need all THAT much airflow.

i vaguely remember reading something about a dimmer doing bad things to fans, but i can't find it in the search. any input?

That link went to a $116 squirrel cage fan in a box. Used for remote ventiulation (fart fan).

A regular dimmer switch can/will cause damage to your fan motor. The best way to quieten your fan has nothing to do with the fan itself, but rather the type of ducting you use to get the exhaust out. Its more a matter of acoustics. A metal duct or warma air pipe will conduct noise just like a a brass trombone. if on the other hand you had a liner inside your trombone made up of insulation, your noise would be minimal. In other words, use insulated ductwork or flexible insulated lining inside your ductwork and you will reduce your noise by 90% or more.
I've worked in the heating air conditioning field for over ten years.

It doesn't work well into every set-up, but the Stanley blower kicks ass. On low setting it is quiet and rated at over 1000cfm. But it is big and not designed for inline.

Works great! only problem is I have 25 feet of this shit.. where do you think I can cut it and it still be effective with noise reduction?
