My first cab

Well my seeds shipped last week and I finished my cab tonight so I thought I'd post what I built. I’ve been doing a lot of reading on the forum so I had a pretty good idea what I wanted to do. The cabinet is taller than I wanted but it was the only one I could find that had the width and depth I wanted without being two short. Cabinet is 20" deep, 36" wide and 80" high.

This first picture shows the cabinet without the doors or back on yet. The hole at the top is where I'm going to be mounting my fan.

This is a close-up of the circle cutter I use.

Damn this thing cuts clean holes.

Picture of the fan mounted.

Side view of the fan and the 4" PVC coupler.

Cutting the holes for my intake ports

Inside view of intake port holes

Cabinet with back on and standing up. No idea why it looks crooked.

Close up of three of the intake ports. I have three on both sides.

Doors on, exhaust port installed in top

Close up of exhaust port

It's Mylar time

This photo shows the "L" for the exhaust and a smaller "L" I installed in the back for the power cord to run through.

These are my intake ports. They're PVC L's that I painted black inside.

Here's a close up of one of the intake ports. I purposely cut the holes a little bit on the small side and then used my grinder to make a lip. This gives me a tight seal on the intake ports.

Intake ports installed

Everything put together. I'm getting a little light leakage out of the intake ports so I may add another L to them to make them into an S instead.

Wow man. That cab looks awesome. Really put some time into it. Are you sure one fan is going to be enough the the whole space?

Looks really good though

Hope so. I've got two things going for me.
  1. The fan is a 120 CFM model
  2. I'm trying a full floru grow so heat shouldn't be a problem.
I'm going to keep an eye on the temps and if I need to I'll switch to a inline fan. I can get 210 CFM using the same ducting or 630 CFM if I go up to a 6".

Looks great dude. Only suggestion would be that you do something about the looseness of yer mylar. Once the fans on I imagine it's going to be really wavey, which really isnt a huge issue but it'd be nice if it was completely flat.

I taped the mylar to sheets of poster foam board (available at any wal*mart/school supply section) and it turned out pretty nice:

Yea, the staple gun method didn't work out as well as I hoped. On the list for Grow Cab 2.0.

This fan came with an adapter so it was pretty straight forward. Most computer fans however can be run off an old cell phone charger. Just cut the plug off the charger, strip the wires and connect them to the fan.

Well I added my light baffle shelf and redid the Mylar. I also added some side lighting. Adding a 4 inch Vortex fan and canister carbon filter next week.

Here's an extra shelf that came with the cab

View with it upside down and before I added the second coat of paint. I drilled a hell of a lot of holes, thank god for my circle cutter, put a support post in the middle and two panels on each end.

Shot of the blocking panel from the outside

And an inside shot

A little Mylar glued on top and some work with an exacto knife and into the cab.

Ummm, smooth Mylar

Like leakage is gone. Not even a hint of light leaking out.

I picked up four, two light shop fixtures that were on sale and eight T8 32 watt, 6500K bulbs. The bulbs are rated at 2800 lumens.

This brings my total up to 22,400 lumens of side lighting and 14,4000 lumens of canopy lighting which gives me a grand total of 36,800 lumens.

Now for some pics:

Full on cab shot

Side shot of two of the new fixtures

Agreed. Eventually I'm going to have a separate veg cabinet and use this one just for flowering. I'll also switch the bulbs in the side lighting when I go to flower.

Right now I have six 6500k (blue) bulbs and two 3000k (red) bulbs in the side lighting. I'll reverse that to two 6500k (blue) bulbs and six 3000k (red) bulbs for flower. I may switch the canopy light to a 250 watt HPS Cool Tube but that won't be for a few grows.

for the flouresents, youll be fine with that ventilation fan,,,

and when you upgrade, '' you must'' use a cool tube as you stated you was,,,

my grows not quick linked like my previous grow was, its in the '' indoor grow section'' or the ''grow journals'' im not sure which, i need to quick link it,,

but anyhow you can go there and look at my cab. which is a closet i framed up, its about the same size as what you got there, i put a 400 hid, in there 4 days ago, to test the heat [ my ventilation] couldnt handle it, it got 100 degrees in there, so i did like you i put, all my flouresents in there, i got 6 tube grow lights, and the temp. is a comfortable 79, i can live with that,,,

we are still modifying it a little, but for flouros, youll be fine, and that cab. is sweet, SMART MAN PAINTING THE INSIDE OF THOSE 90 degree pipes, GOOD LUCK!!!!!!
