Making a carbon filter with a computer fan?

I'm planning on buying computer fans for ventilation of my grow box. My question is will a computer fan have enough force to used as a fan for a home made carbon filter?

Here are the specs of the computer fan:
  • Fan Dimension: 120 mm x 120 mm x 25 mm
  • Fan Speed: 2000 rpm
  • Max Air Flow: 54.5 CFM
  • Noise: 27 dBA
  • Life Time: 100,000 hours
Thanks in advance!

i believe it is possible with another fan but your going to have a very small filter
not much larger than the diamerers of the fans

The computer fan is about 4.7 inches (120mm).

No. Those fans do not have the torque to pull air against enough resistance to make an effective scrubber. To get rid of smell, air has to touch a significant amount of carbon, and while that fan can pull against a little resistance, even that slows it down a shit load.

Squirrel cage fans will do it. Or inline blowers. Big motors.

I heard you can do ok with a bathroom exhaust fan, but it's not great.

I found another fan, same size except more powerful. I think this one might do it here are the specs:
Voltage =12v
Amperage: .6 amps
Input power: 7.2 watts
Speed: 3200 rpm
Airflow: 130 cfm!

Noise: 48.0 Db(A)

Will this one work? If so do you think that 48.0 Db is too noisy? This is for a "stealth" Grow. Thanks

48 Db is about the noise a vacume cleaner give off... lmfao

if u make the scrubber in a tube shape with a 120mm fan on each and it should work... ive seen it done, ill try to get a link

edit: http://cgi.ebay.com/CARBON-AIR-SCRUB...QQcmdZViewItem
u could make one exactly like this really easy, but u can use lower cfm fans if there at both ends because they suck and blow air through at the same time... u could also have both fans blowing into a tube with permiable walls (basicly 2 layers of screen with activated carbon between them.

whatever u decide to build when u mount the fans put rubber at any contact points to reduce vibration and thus noise, also you can wire any 12v to a 9v adapter it will slow it down to make it quieter but if that doesnt have enough power you can buy a dimmer switch and hook that up to the fans to fine tune your rpms so that you get enough sucktion at the quietest speed. my two cents

well i dn if its quite that loud, maybe as loud as a car idling but the tone of fans is high pitched, meaning its kinda a peircing sound, and really annoying lol...
