Re: Home Made DWC in Stealth Closet

I use 4" flex (standard dryer hose). I have to use a 6" to 4" reducer because my fan is 6". Most centrifugal fans make very little noise, but the air passing through the fan can make quite a racket. Anything that moves lots of air will have the same problem.

Insolate the fan and make sure you have a few feet of ducting on each side of it. If that is not enough, then you can try a rheostat (speed control). I have been told not to use a dimmer switch as a rheostat, but I use one anyway.

Re: Home Made DWC in Stealth Closet

oh ok. so i should be fine then. with a good centrifugal fan would i need about 240 cfms or something larger than that just in case?

thanks for all your information man. it means a lot to me. more than i can probably express on here. i just wish i could talk to you in person and see your closet. but i think once i get mine up and running it will go fairly well. with the lucas formula im not sure if i can really mess up too bad... at least in that aspect of the grow which is what i have always been concerned about with any type of hydro system.

oh and what brand is your light set up? i have been pricing a 400w hps system. i dont need a reflector as i will be making my own. is there really that much difference between brand names? not sure if you have tried other brands or not so not sure if you would know that one.

Re: Home Made DWC in Stealth Closet

well after looking around i have found an inline centrifugal fan but im not sure if its up to the task of cooling my room. my room is smaller than yours so shouldnt need as big of a fan but this is what i was looking at.

Valueline 6 Inch 435 CFM Centrifugal Inline Fan - Plantlighting Hydroponics

it is made in china but has a 5 year warenty. unfortunatelly there arent many specs for it available. but from what i have been reading it seems like these should be good fans. if it even only lasts me 2 yrs or so i would be happy with that investment. also i was thinking of ways that might help save fan life as a lot of people are stating the heat from the light can cause the fan to go out faster. would it be possible to run that fan in my attic and have it pulling through a carbon filter then push through my cool tube and vent back into the attic? or is there not enough heat with a 400w hps to worry about that?

True story. R
lol that is pretty funny. Next time just tell them that you brew your own beer. That won't raise any eyebrows at all. I get my Co2 from welding shops to carbonate and dispense my beer kegs.

Re: Home Made DWC in Stealth Closet

Rumple;

I apologise if this has been asked before but I couldn't find it.......

My cab is very similar to yours. My light is vented (6" duct fan) from under the room (outside) and exhausted through the roof. I have a 6" vortex for my filter which i hooked up last night, this also vents through the roof to outside.

My room is sealed, even the electrical outlets. I'm using Co2 controlled by CCH1 enviro controller. According to Jorge Cervantes, the air still needs to be exchanged with fresh air every couple hours, especially at night. I'm not sure how to set that up without having 3 fans (actually 4 fans if you count the circular fan).
I noticed you have a normally closed dampener in your ceiling, is that how you exchange the stale humid air with fresh air? Or, do you ever exchange the air if the temps and humidity are within parameters? Some people say you shouldn't ever bring fresh air into a Co2 sealed room but I'm going with Jorge, I'm sure he knows more about this than the average Joe.

Please give me your thoughts and recommendations for the vent as my girls are going in next Monday.
The room is 4'-4" x 4'-4" x 8'-0"

Thanks in advance,

B

Re: Home Made DWC in Stealth Closet

I'm thinking of inline fan to fill the room with fresh air outside but I have to buy a normally closed dampner that would open easily.

Peace

I still need to do air exchanges. The temp goes above 80 and the room needs to be vented out (bye bye CO2). So I need two fans. one for the cool-tube and one for the room.

First off keep up the great work Rumple. It has been said many times before but you have been a great inspiration and just an amazing fountain of knowledge and I really appreciate all the threads you have started.

Compliments aside I am planning my next room (current one was put together in a bit of a rush due to excitement, building one just the way I want in the basement while using the makeshift one.

Right now I am in soil but I want to go over to bubble buckets and one thing I am still a bit curious on is the ventilation. While I doubt I'll be doing co2 enrichment on my first hydro run (money and another thing to go wrong before I figure out all the little ins and outs) I would like to be able to add it one day without any real issues. Assuming the following:

  • Light properly cooled by a cooltube
  • Room kept below 80 (by an AC system that pulls hot air from the room itself, cools it, and the replaces it with the cool air.
  • Room keep at a proper humidity level with a dehumidifier.
When I say room above I mean the actual grow area itself which will be sealed (as apposed to the whole room which has a veg area, some storage, etc..).

Would there be any need to vent the room? I know the plants should use the co2 and give off oxygen (thus lowering the co2 levels in the room and raising the oxygen levels) but I am unsure as to how much they use. I assume the room would need fresh air brought in at some point but when would be the time to swap air?

Sounds like you have the right setup for CO2. You will need a constant flow of fresh air going into the room if you can't inject CO2. May want to cool it with fresh air and save your AC unit for later on.

Thanks for the quick reply. I want the room to be able to handle co2 later but right now it's not a priority for me. I figured if I'm building the ultimate room I am not going to want to redo it at a later date to add support for co2 enrichment.

My current plans (co2less) are to pull in fresh air from outside the room but in the basement (our house including the basement is air conditioned in the summer and gets pretty cool in the winter due to my northern climate). That intake air will be for both the light as well as the room (without co2 I plan to try and change out the volume every 2 minutes or so).

I am going to be exhausting up through the chimeny as we had a new furnace installed that power-vents out the side of the house and I can use the old port left on the chimney for exhaust air. With a carbon filter and exhausting about 2.5 stories up I hope the smell shouldn't be an issue.
