Re: Home Made DWC in Stealth Closet

Quick questions Rumple,

I am growing in a 5x9x7' fully sealed room. I have two 600w HPS lights in aircooled hoods. I'm also using the CHHC-1, co2 enrichment, and bubble buckets. I have also added a a/c unit and dehumidifier. My question is what are the ideal day and night temps? I have my day temp at 82* and my night temp at 75*, how does that sound. Humidity stays at a constand 50%.

This is my second grow using the bubble buckets and I am amazed at how well it turned out the first time. Hopefully with this new room and ideal conditions I can yield something close to yours. Shooting for 6oz each from 8 plants.

All your numbers look great. I wish I could do what your doing (AC). You got me beat big time.

Hey Rumpleforeskin, first off I want to say props to you for your open minded help to all those noobs out there!
I use a airstones in my waterfarms, and the root growth is insane, and soooo easy to grow this way. I thnk it is funny when people talk about it bein' harder to grow hydro! Thats just from the old school soil growers out there who tend to hate most new types of growin'. Sorry for rantin', don't want to turn into a troll. Thanks again, protopipe

Re: Home Made DWC in Stealth Closet

ok i just read the entire thing and i have a closet that i am about to build that is very close to what you have. i dont have a co2 system and probably wont at this time. but the main question i have for you is in regards to your fans and nutes.

on the fans how many cfms are they pushing and how loud are they? im thinking of using this fan method with a 110cfm or 240 cfm version of the fan. Panasonic Whisper Fan Carbon Scrubber Tutorial: Quietest most efficient fan ever! - Page 2 - International Cannagraphic Magazine Forums

now i dont have the $$ for 2 fans at this time so i was thinking of using that fan/carbon filter set up. i would have the filter/fan combo inside of my box pulling the air through the filter and then it would be blowing through the either 4" or 6" vent. i will then hook it up to a cool tube and exhaust the other side of the cool tube to my atic.

i plan on using a 400w hps like you have. would that work for cooling the light and maintaining at least an 85* temp in the box? i know that temp isnt the best but it is what i have to shoot for as my house is around 75*.

now for the nutes question. i know you are using the Lucas Formula but the link that you have been linking to in this thread are not working any longer. is there an updated link that i could use as a reference?

thank you so much for this thread. i have read all of your threads and i love what you are doing. im going to be building the buble buckets and the airoponics cloner you have built.

i have been trying to think of a way to self contain that 5gal cloner you desinged and well i think i figured it out. if you get one of those large plastic trash cans from lowes. i think they are the 55gal ones. you can put the 5gal cloning bucket into it and then mount the lights either to the lid or on the sides of the barrel and boom. you have a self contained cloning chamber if you do not have a room/chamber to support that type of a system.

also how do you keep your mothers so small? just not a lot of lighting?

sorry but it wont let me give you any more rep atm.... guess your other threads took it all hahah. =)

-edit ok i found the lucas formula and boy is it so simple. i just want to know do you use the full strength for the veg? i know you only use it once and change it when you start 12/12 but just wondering if you use the full strength.

I dont care for the fart-fan idea that much. That type of fan has trouble pumping air through ducting. It can pump through a few feet of unrestricted ducting, but adding a carbon filter to it will reduce its output to next to nothing.

Do the same thing with a 6" canfan. Get one that can move more then 250 CFM.

I feed my plants using the Lucas Formula. It calls for General Hydroponic brand nutrients. Buy a bottle of General Hydroponics Flora Micro and Flora Bloom (micro is black and bloom is red in color). Don't buy the Flora Grow. You have to get them online (ebay is good) or at a hydro store. I buy everything online (nothing illegal about it.)

General Hydroponics Flora Series Feeding Strategy - Lucas Formula

G-M-B (Grow-Micro-Bloom)
0-5-10 - For Vegetative cycle (24/0)
0-8-16 - For Flowering cycle (12/12)

The numbers above indicate the number of milliliters (ml/cc) of Flora Grow, Flora Micro or Flora Bloom formulas that I use in one gallon (US Liquid) of nutrients.

You will notice I dont use any of the "Flora Growformula, do not need to, the "Flora Micro" provides plenty of Nitrogen.

1. Top off the reservoir daily using a pH corrected water solution as required to maintain full reservoir level. After adding back an amount of water equal to the amount of your reservoir capacity you should change the reservoir and put in fresh solution.

How to use the Lucase formula in my bucket?
I will give an example step by step.

Vegetative cycle (first stage of growth when the lights are on 24 hours a day):

My bucket's fill point is at 3.5 gallons. So I need to measure 3.5 gallons of pure water (distilled or reverse osmosis) into an empty bucket (not your bubble bucket, just a clean bucket).
The formula calls for 5cc of Flora Micro per gallon (5x3.5=17.5cc). So I add 17.5cc of the Micro to my bucket of water. Stirr it in good.
Next the formula calls for 10cc of Flora Bloom per gallon (10x3.5=35cc). So I add 35cc of bloom and stirr.
Always add the nutrients seperate. Never mix them together before stirring them into the water.

PH....... Your PH needs to be between 5.7 and 6.2. Test your nutrient. Add your adjustment solution in small amounts until you know how strong the stuff is. Mine take 5 full eye droppers of PH up to get my target PH of 6.0
Yours will not be the same. Depends on the water.

Flowering Cycle (lights on for 12 hours and off for 12 hours).

Same as above except a bit more nutrient.
8cc of micro per gallon (8x3.5=28cc).
16cc of Bloom per gallon (16x3.5=56cc)

They sell paint buckets that are clear and have measurments on the side. Good tip.

Any questions?

Re: Home Made DWC in Stealth Closet

well i have since changed my fan system. i found a panosonic whisper in line fan that does 340 cfm and only 1.4 sones. im at work posting from my phone so i cant get a link to it atm but will later tonight. should it be enough to pull through a filter and cool my bulb with a cool tube?

also my grow space is about 2'x2'x10' if i do 2 plants like you have do you think i could get 8 oz at least? is ww the best plant for this set up you have found? are there other strains that you have found that harvest well? i dont need anywhere close to what you harvest. i wouldnt mind it though =) but would like to harvest 8 oz every 2.5 mo.

stealth is my main concern. i already have the room planned out just working on the fan issue.

what is the temp of the air you have coming into your box to cool the bulb? needing to see if pulling air from my attic will work. i can bring air from another room by unhooking an ac vent then running an intake from the vent to pull air from the house but it would be a 10 to 20 ft run. would running 8" line from the vent be enough to pull the ammt of air im going to need? the fan has 6" in and out.

sorry for all the questions just once i work all this out ill be able to start the grow. bout to start building my false wall.

i am however familiar with GH ph adjustment. i am using their ph up and down with my soil grow.

They have PC fans that make zero noise and put out 340 CFM, but it would be just as useless as that overpriced fart fan you are thinking of getting. CFM is measured with no static pressure, so using it as your only means of measuring the fan may not cut it.

Most fans cant pump air through more then a foot or two of ducting. Real duct fans don't come cheap. You can't buy a real one at the hardware store.

You have two choices:

Inline duct fan

Squirrel Cage

Re: Home Made DWC in Stealth Closet

well im not looking at buying one from a harware store. im not looking at using the fan that i posted in that link before. im actually looking into using this fan Panasonic Whisperline FV-30NLF1 Ventilation Fans - Panasonic Whisper Line™ In Line Fans

i wont be pushing any air. i will have that fan mounted in the atic pulling throught about 4-5ft of 6" dryer vent. pulling through my filter then tube and then vent into the attic.

noise is the biggest problem i have. those fans like you have shown are quite loud from what i hear and i cant have that at all. there wont be any air that needs to be pushed to anywhere.the long hose is just a passive intake as i cant make any holes in the box other than the vents to the attic.

and i figure if it does loose some cfm due to the filter and the short distance it has to travel it shouldnt be more than 100cfm. i would think that 200cfm would be more than enough to cool the set up im looking at. which is why im going for such a large fan. or am i just completely wrong about this fan?

if i am wrong how loud is the set up you have? i know those fans would be the best choice but with sound being as important as it is i cant risk anything.

-edit here is the fan on the manufactures site. and it does list some static pressure cfms. how much stactic am i goin to be looking at? its rated for continuous use as well

Re: Home Made DWC in Stealth Closet

i wasnt meaning to come across like that. sorry if i did. been a bad day at work. im just trying to see if you think that fan could do the job. if not ill be looking for an alternative. i just really like that fan because of how quiet it was. if it comes down to it ill buy a good inline fan and fabricate an insulated sheetmetal box to put it in and then hang it. and hopefully its quiet enough. what size would you suggest for the inline fan?

also my brother works with airconditioners and has access to sound deadening materials that i think could help

Re: Home Made DWC in Stealth Closet

Whisper fans are not new to indoor growing. I have seen other folks use them. They work well as long as you dont hook them up to more then two feet of ducting. If you hook that filter to it, the air movement will slow down considerably. Cooling a 400W HID take lots of air movement.

A good 6" fan will cool that room nice.

[QUOTE=Rumpleforeskin;2047463]I went back to flex ducting. The PVC was a pain to adjust. I had different lengths of PVC I would insert every time I did an adjustment. Flex is better if your lazy like me.

Did you notice a difference in noise between the solid PVC and the flex? I know I am quoting an old post but do you remember?

Lot less sound with the flex

Re: Home Made DWC in Stealth Closet

again sorry about the way i came across earlier. i was typing from my phone and i work 12 hr shifts and well sometimes it just gets to me.

wasnt sure if people had tried to use those fans like i was wanting to do. i know ventallation/filter are some of the most important parts so im looking at some inline fans now.

now a few more questions if you dont mind. how loud are your fans. can you hear them from inside your house? if so how loud? comparable to central heat/ac?

and do you know where to find 6" diameter pyrex tubes? i am wanting to make my own cool tube as they are wayyyy expensive to buy. i was looking at the bake a rounds but they are only 4" tubes. i know those will work but i would like to find a 6" if all possible. if you dont know anywhere off hand to get some will i have any negative drawbacks if i go the bake a round method and have a 4"-6" coupler on the tube and then run 6" flex to my fan? and if i do the bake a round should i use 4" flex to my filter or use 6" then just reduce for the cool tube and back to 6"

again thanks for all your help. you've inspired me a lot.
