If you could please go into some detail as to how you have the two grow buckets and resovoir connected together. I can't get a good look at the plumbing from the pictures you posted.

I'm guessing you use some flexible tubing to make setting it all up and breaking it down easier? Black to keep out the light or clear to see all the junk floating at the bottom?

When you go to change out your water do you care about the little bit thats left below the drains, or do you suck it out with something

Also, when you're recirculating your water before taking a ph reading, are you only using one pond pump for all 3 buckets? If so how do you have that connected?

If you get a chance to answer any of these thanks,

Bentus
i was wondering this exact same information with the hooking up of the pond pump. Is it submersible? Do you hook the outlet of the pump to an inlet of one of the buckets?? any help would be appreciated

Re: Home Made DWC in Stealth Closet

I have a short hose hooked to my drain. It connects to the suction side of a small pond pump (Via Aqua 1300)

I hook a longer hose to the discharge side of the pond pump. Now I can turn on the pump. open the valve and drain/circulate the buckets.

Below is me circulating from the center bucket with the drain to the left bucket's mesh basket:

Then I switch over the the right side bucket.
Below is a picture of the discharge hose hooked to the fill port of the right side bucket.

Most pond pumps have extra stuff included to make it a normal transfer pump.

Hey Rumple,

I've been reading up on all your threads for the last couple days (any free time I have between my finals). I am a bit confused about your reservoir set up. I understand that you keep a nutrient mix in the reservoir. Then, correct me if I'm wrong, you will draw the nutrients from the reservoir to refill the plant buckets. Is there anything more to this? Is there a reason you don't just mix the nutrient solution as necessary and top off the plants?

I'm trying to look through your pictures to see if there's anything more to your buckets. It seems as if the reservoir has a fluid level indicator as well as a drain. The plant buckets seem to only have fills and drains. How do you determine how much water to add to them.

I'm sorry if you've answered this before, but through your multiple threads and revisions to your setup, I got a little lost.

As for my setup right now. I have 5 5-gallon buckets, each with a fluid level indicator and drain valve. This is going in a 5x6' room that is about 6'6" tall. Right now I have a single 400w HPS, but my buddy has a 1000w HPS that I could use for flowering (would you suggest moving up to the 1000w)? For bubbling, I was going to run a single dual output pump, but after reading about how you feel bubbles are so important, I'm considering getting another.

Hopefully you can get back to me soon, as my 4 out of my 5 clones (3 sour-d/bubba kush, 1 white widow, 1 purple kush) have started to show roots and should be ready for transplant soon. I have them in rapid rooter plugs. Can I place that directly in the hydroton or should I put the plug into a rockwool cube and then add hydroton. I'm almost tempted to transplant fewer plants after hearing how successful you are with fewer plants and the scrogging technique.

BTW this is my first grow of any sort, so please excuse the noob-ish questions.

I re-read the thread and figured out some stuff. I now have all of my buckets in series with each other so that the water level will be able to reach and equilibrium. I also have a fill as well as a drain that are in series with the next bucket (drain of one to the fill of the next) for mixing the nutrient solution. Almost ready to go.

Re: Home Made DWC in Stealth Closet

I'm glad you saved me from typing that one again about hooking up in a series. Most folks seemed to understand it better when they have the buckets built and have messed around with them a bit. Great job.

Hahah yeah. It took me a while to set everything up, especially with 5 buckets. I definitely confused myself a couple times.

So the other question I have is with 5-5 gallon buckets and a 15gallon tub as a reservoir, how much airflow do I need. I was thinking one 60gallon pump for 3 buckets, and then one 120 gallon capable pump, with one port to the 4th and 5th bucket and the other to the reservoir. Do you think that will be sufficient?

Also, my clones are rooted in the rapid rooter. Should I put the plugs into rockwool or should I put them right into the hydroton and buckets.

THANKS!

Re: Home Made DWC in Stealth Closet

I am real into overkill on the air pumps. I like 60 gallon pump per bucket. Does it help? I have no idea, but it's what I do.

Re: Home Made DWC in Stealth Closet

I have the same question as stealth grower...

I read this ENTIRE thread all the way through, and it is a gold-mine of information by the way!

You mention several times that you vent into the attic... do you actually use a carbon scrubber of any sort? or simply let your attics vent fans exhaust the smelly air to the sky?

Thanks... awesome setup btw

Re: Home Made DWC in Stealth Closet

Up until last month I have been using ozone. I just installed a carbon scrubber to my room vent in the attic. I will let you know if it helps after this grow cycle.

Re: Home Made DWC in Stealth Closet

you had an ozone generator in the attic? or one of those inline ones at the end of your exhaust pipe?

Will you be using the carbon scrubber in addition to the ozone generator?

very interested in this! and thanks for the quick response!
