First Indoor Grow - Page 7

Happy New Year!

No, it's not a stealth grow. I own my own house, but I do get visits from in-laws and parents every couple of months. The good thiing is that we live 5 hours away from them, so it is not like they can just pop in.

Fortunately, the grow closet is actually in my office/den. So sleeping through the light won't be a problem. I was looking at one of the HydroFarm Sunburst grow lights, with the optional cooling fan.

How much heat does one of these things put off. If I do leave the door open, is it going to heat up the adjoining room? I spend a lot of time in here and I don't want it to be like 10 degrees warmer than the rest of the house.

One other question, and this may be the most important, will I notice a difference? Currently my main light (the hanging one) that I am using is a 150 watt compact fluorescent grow light full spectrum warm 2700K. It supposedly puts off 14K lumens. I think a 250 watt HID increases that to 20k, but does penetrate better.

I am so confused. I want to get the most out of my grow. It is all for personal consumption, so I don't want to spend too much. If buying an HPS or MH light is not going to increase yield or decrease production time then I may just stick with the fluoros..

the heat it generates is not much but is alot for the plant, no your room wount get hot...

Yes MH and HPS will GREATLY!! increase your growth and Yield, I was amazed as i usually do outdoor which takes forever. with hps/mh every day you look at it its grown, you can actually see the difference.

Any recommendations on brand, wattage etc. I was thinking 250 watts would be enough. I am probably going to try to find one on ebay, but I am not sure which are good and which are crap. I have a hydrofarm CFL right now, and my hydro setup is also hydrofarm. I am pretty happy with their products, but they are more expensive than others.

I have the CoolTouchLighting.com's 1000W switchable.

if you get it from there make sure you get the MH upgrade,,, Veg under HPS isnst as good as MH.

I like the hood better on this one (http://www.hydroponicslight.com/prod...o.asp?dbid=528) than the "bat wing" design". That's kind of why I was looking at the hydrofarm light. The price is pretty steep, but it just looks like a better made light to me than the indiesun lights. Do I need any of the air cooled add-ons? It seems like with 250 I wouldn't, but I figure I should ask people that know.

One more question. Is it better to get an all-in-one (meaning ballast is in the hood) or a seperate ballast and hood in your opinions? Are there advantages or disadvantages to each?

remote ballast is always better, both for your plants and your ballast.

Thats a good price for the switchable, concidering 1/2 the cost is already in the included bulbs.

So I decided to do some LST on my plants. (Thanks to the encouragement of Dier Wolf) I decided to post some before and after shots. Keep in mind that all of these plants were nute burned last week (see page 5 of this journal) and before that I fimmed them.

Pic 1 is before the LST...

Pic 2 is right after I did the LST and a little trimming done at approx midnight est...

Pic 3 is another shot from last night...

Pic 4 is what they look like this morning...

Pic 5 is another angle from this morning...

Check out all of the new bud sites (from the previous fim) that are now being exposed to the light and growing like crazy. I wouldn't of believed it unless I saw it with my own eyes. Hopefully the pictures do it justice. The new growth, after 12 hours, is amazing.

I just fimmed all of the bud sites that I could on the newly LST'd plants. We will see how that effects them.

That will promote new branches above each fan leaf on the banch, just like it did on the main stem when you fimmed the top.

Try keeping the branches down so light gets to the branch stems. this will speed up the entire process

OK, on the advice of my good friend dier I am trying the massacre technique. Here are some pics after the killing. I will take some more in a few days when the growth returns.

Both of the plants have been fimmed, trimmed and tied down. Let's see what they do next.
