After a lot of reading, I have decided not to FIM or top. I just don't think that I have enough experience or space, so I am just going to let them grow and hope for the best. I may eventually do some LST, but I am not sure. I will post some pics from weeks 3 shortly. Plants are looking healthy, and two are very bushy. Can't wait to start flowering, but I am only at 4 inches after 3 weeks of growth.

New Pics...

Here are some new pics. I just added 2 60w CFL's to the left and front of the grow box. The grow is about 3 weeks old now...

A pic of all 4 plants:

The healthiest pant.

The healthiest plabt and the formerly "wrinkled" plant side by side. The healthiest pant is very wide and bushy while the "wrinkled" plant is taller and lanky.

I wish that I could get this baby to grow taller. Right now it is about 4 inches and bushy as hell. I guess it isn't a bad thing though.

A few more pics...

The two healthiest plants from the side. I know that the thermometer says 37% RH right now, but it goes back up to 70-80% when I have the door closed.

This was the "wrinkled" plant. It seems to be holding it's own now.

This one show the 2 small (60w each) CFL's in their regular position.

Plant will take up more vertical space if you dont fim or top.... you need to fim and or top to allow vertical growth to slow while allowing side growth (new branches) to form, or pretty much the bottom of your plant will be useless in the end.

But its your choice, if you dont that lights gonna have to be moving up and up and up and up and up

Just so you know, fan leaves dont make bud sites, branches do.

It's not that I don't want to FIM, I jusy don't want to f it up. I am a little scared. Even after reading and seeing pictures and everything, I am a little nervous to FIM or Top.

Should I prune any of the fan leaves at this point?

Just a note, I have lots of vertical space, at least 4 feet, but not much horizontal space, as you can probably tell by my pictures, the plants are pretty close to eachother.

Nope, just hurts the plant and makes it grow slower.

L i L K u B B s: Topping is cutting the whole top of the plant off, just to make it shorter.

FIM is where you cut the top 90% of the growth tip(s).

OK, So I am going to try FIM on one or two plants. The examples that I see use a razor blad shaped like a 'U'. Is it ok to just use scissors or pruning shears or something similar? Sterilized of course.

I have to differ again.

pruning fan leaves does not hurt the plant at all and no way slows growth, it makes thing grow faster, hell i just balded my trees today again, and i will have to do it all over again in 2 to 3 days when the new fan leaves that are popping up from the new branches get mature enough.

Reason

Fan leaves get in the way of light blocking lower branches from getting enough light, removing them lets the light travel all the way down to all new growth, he top of the tree is not your most important you know, unless you want just one good cola.

Fimming is cutting 80-90% of the very very new growth, unlike topping your not taking off the entire thing so growth continues from that spot anyways, topping it does not, it simply stops the tree at that spot and allows for more energy to be spent developing the lower branches creating more bud sites.

Topping is an older technique than fimming, fimming is the way to go. Fimming and training is an even better way to go but in your situation i would o only fimming.

And yes you are GUARANTEED more bud sites by fimming and topping.

I have read that sometimes fimming doesn't work. Ever had it not work?

oh boy seems you been reading to much

forget the U-shaped thing, just get a good barbers scissors and open up the very last top 2 fan leafs thats comoing out, inside there is yet another 2 fanleaves just they dont look like it but more like a clump of green, cut that in 1/2 to 3/4.

its quite hard to F-up, i dont even see how you can, just dont cut it all of coz then it becomes Topping (which aint bad either for where your at right now, but i much rather fimming)

Pruning fan leaves does not creat more bud sites.

slowing the top of the tree down so that the energy is spent on the lower limbs is what creates bud sites...

if its your first time growing you will not understand until you see the first branchs come out,

keep a look out right above each fan leaf stem, they emerge from right there, one branch above each fan leaf stem.

Prining of fan leaves should only be done when its blocking light from getting to an area you need light, which for you right now all at the stem so that the branches form.

Also when pruning fan leaves do not cut off the entire stem right at the main trunk, simply cut the stem in the middle and leave part of the stem sticking out of the main truck... you will understand why when you see the branches forming.
