and btw - nice take on a chiller, had no idea you was THAT crafty, but then again, given how stealthy you need to be that must come in handy!
LOL...that wasn't crafty, that was desperation. And it was simple enough that even I could do it. Just a pump, a fridge, some hose, and a drill....plus a little silicone to seal up the holes. And even then it took two tries to get it right. The first fridge I bought didn't have a freezer compartment or a compressor, which are essential to making this thing work heh.

how many quarts (or liters) is the root zone?

I want to be sure I have enough of a root zone for my 6 plants, but I have no idea how big roots will get at each age. I got about 30 quarts, give or take

It's a 13 gallon reservoir. I probably would have been ok if I'd started flowering a few days earlier, but, as usual, I waited too long lol. Even though I've grown this strain before, it was under CFL's, and I wasn't prepared for the explosive growth I got this time under the HPS.

You're basically right, you want really small plants that will basically produce a single cola each. However you still have to give the clones a few days to adjust to the more intense lighting and nutrient concentration in the grow chamber before you throw in the added stress of 12/12 lighting. So you're going to have a few days of veg, maybe a full week, but not much more than that.

My problem was that I left the clones in the cloner way too long so they were too tall, and they were very sick. As a result I had to give them even more time to recover before I could flower. That said, I probably gave them a bit too much time. I should probably have switched to 12/12 3 or 4 days earlier than I did.

well, you made a good call imo, they had to go!

it's crazy how much of a difference light makes esp when you are coming from CFL

I do really like the 125 watt CFL, it aint that hot and easier to manage than 6 clamp lights

good info, I got another bigger root zone for flowering so I should be in good shape for 6 plants and I doubt they will ALL be female

Day 21 - Everybody stretch!

Well the girls are starting to look a little more like their sativa parent and a lot less like a garden shrubbery . The stretch is not nearly as pronounced as it was the first time under the CFLs, though.

Top view - you can hardly tell I removed the other three plants.

Close up - I'm still getting just a touch of "heat stress" although I think it's more a case of really low humidity than actual heat. Ambient temps are staying around 80F during lights on, which *should* be within tolerance. But it's been really really dry lately. So much so that I've woken up with a bit of a sore throat for the last few days.

Side view - There are some nice preflowers forming, but not really anything that'll show up on film yet. It seems kind of slow, but looking at my journal from the last time I grew this strain, that's normal. They took forever to start flowering, and then finished absurdly fast.

Oh, and one last note of interest - I've now confirmed that my TDS is a 0.7 conversion. I've been running under the mistaken belief that it was 0.5. Both of my last grows had problems with cal/mag deficiencies about half way through flower....now I know why

That light's an HPS and the plants are already having heat issues as it is. I've been keeping it about 15" above the plants, in part to keep the heat controlled, but also to try to get an even amount of light to all of the plants.

a 1000watt hpw? move that bad boy closer and try to get that space in between the tops and the light cooler. hpss only have max penetration at about 12 in. moving it closer would be advicable for the density of buds that you want. if its a 400watt, look into a cermanic metal halide for your hps ballast/fixture. other than that, shits lookin dank!

Day 23 - You know your grow is going well when.....

You unzip your Hydrohut and the first words that come to mind are "HOLY SHIT!" lol.

The plants have put on a rather impressive amount of growth in the last two days. And the tops have started to bud up a little bit.

The only minor issue is that for some reason my pH has started to drift down just a bit. It's probably because I've got such a high concentration of nutes in the reservoir. It's easily fixed though.

Vitals -
pH - 5.6
TDS - 1230ppm - added enough to increase it to 1350ppm
Ambient temps - 68F, lights out - 78F lights on
Res temp - 74F

Yeah, I've had more than my share of those moments too. This grow has been a real pleasure since, for once, everything's gone almost perfectly. At least it has once I finally got the plants in the tub.
