800-1000w MH/HPS/CFL Kushage Grow Journal

I've been growing for a handful of years and always keep a journal for my own personal edification. Although I've never kept up with pictures enough to get a grow journal going online. But for whatever reason I decided to start one..... I will have some pics tomorrow or the next day. I doubt I will keep up with this journal everyday, but I want to do this complete this time so I will add to it at least weekly.


Here's a little preface.......

My buddy bought a pack of Kushage seeds from T.H. Seeds and his harvest is ready to smoke as of a few days ago. Heres a link to some pics I have of the finished product. He saved 2 seeds for me.

So I guess I should start with the specs...

• I use a closet for my growroom, which is about 6' tall x 2 1/2' deep x 4' wide. It has a drop ceiling so I built a normal bathroom exhaust fan into a ceiling tile which sits directly above my more powerful lights. In addition, I have a 15" oscilating fan on each end of the closet to keep temps down and to strengthen stems.
• For lighting I have four (4) HID fixtures which have ballasts that accept either a 175w MH bulb or a 75w HPS bulb. During veg I use MH bulbs in all four. During flowring I change two bulbs to the 75w HPS to account for marijuanas enjoyment of the red spectrum during flowering. For additional side/under lighting I have eight (8) 42w CFL bulbs. Veg total wattage=1036w (about 15 watts/sq. ft.) Flowering total wattage=836w. (about 12 w/sq. ft.)
• To germinate I use the classic paper towel in a zip-lock bag method. I plant them as soon as they crack and a tiny bit of plant is peaking out. From my experience, the less growth in the paper towel equates to stronger growth later in the plants life..... or at least it seems that way.
• After germination, seeds get planted in 16oz. beer pong cups. Once they are 4-5" tall or reached the 3rd internode I transplant them into 8" wide pots. When appropriate, (usually a foot tall) they again are transplanted into their final home, 15" wide pots (I think which are 3 gallons). I never transplant during flowering.
• My medium is a mixture of Fox Farm Ocean Forest Organic potting soil and a little pearlite.
• The nutrients I use, and have enjoyed using for a few years, are from Age Old Organics. I use their 'Grow' 12-6-3 for veg and 'Bloom' 5-10-5 for flowering.
• Right now in addition to the 2 Kushage sprouts, I have 2 plants from some kind of skunk strain which are about 6-8" tall..... one Sweet tooth plant which is about 10" tall.....one bagseed plant which is about 8" tall.....a pot with 8 gladiolus bulbs sprouting in it and a pot with 2 amaryllis sprouts.

Day 1 (12/22/07):
Today I put two (2) Kushage seeds (from T.H.Seeds) in a wet paper towel, inside a zip-lock bag, to germinate overnight.

Day 2 (12/23/07):
Both seeds germimated in less than 24 hours. I planted both 1" below the soil in a 16oz plastic cup, watered, and set under lights. The lighting is on a 20/4 photoperiod.

Day 3 (12/24/07):
I checked this morning and both seeds poked through the soil and have unrolled their cotyledons. The tallest one is around 1".

Nothing new to post. Second set of leaves are growing now. Heres a pic I took on 12/24....

sweet grow set up man, im gonna be checking in on this.

so do you think that multiple mh/hps are the way to go? i am starting a grow soon and i was gonna try and stick with 1 light for the veg cabinet and 1 light for the flower cabinet. any suggestions? im doing 6 plants in each cab.

I think either way will work well. It really all depends on you. Obviously in most cases more light is better, but not always. I too have a veg cab and a flowerin closet. I stopped using them both and combined the lighting to make what I have now. What works best for your situation is the way to go..... often trial and error brings you to the correct combination.


Also, I think is fucking awesome that your into K Dub!!!! You're the only other person on this forum (so far) that has portrayed his love for Keller. I've seen him only 4 times and he's with out a doubt my favorite musician. I base my music playing on how he plays..... I love to loop.

I've been saving for the Jam Cruise 8 or 9 or whatever..... hopefully I'll get enough, Kellers playing it.

Yesterday (1/2/08) I transplanted the Kushage plant from its 6" pot to a much bigger, 15" pot. I believe the volume of said pot is about 2.5 gallons.

Unfortunately, one of my dickhead cats ate the other seedling so I only have one Kushage plant now......the one from the previous pics.

This is a plant thats about 1 month old..... its a skunk strain from a bagseed. The pic is a little blurry but I wanted to post it to show how I train my plants. I put 2 stakes (this time I used 14 AWg insulated wire because its strong and easy to manuver) on either side of the main stem and position the leaves so it looks as if they only grow out of two sides......instead of four. This type of training twists the stem so the fan leaves are all on the right or left side of the plant, leaving a lot of open space for the new shoots growin out of each node. Doing this allows a lot more light to reach lower shoots without having to cut off any fan leaves. You can kinda tell what I'm talking about.... You can see the 2 stakes if you look towars the top of the plant. And you can easily see all the shoots growing freely towards the bottom of the plant.

Dude Keller IS the man. He is my favorite musician. If i had to only listen to one artist it would be him, cause he is so different. I've seen him only once so far while I was rolling, I was front row standing and it was awsome. Im gonna see him at bonaroo this year. good luck with your grow

Today is 1/8/08 and it is the 15th day of vegetative growth. This morning I gave my baby it's first feeding. I use Age Old Organics 'Grow' which is 12-6-3...... the suggested amount is 1 teaspoon per 1 gallon of water. For the first feeding I always dillute it so I have a solution that is 1/4 full strength. On subsequent feedings I make a stiffer solution....going from 1/4 to 1/2, and then to the full amount.

These pictures were taken this morning and last night.... I'm not sure which is which.

Knock on some serious wood but, this plant is growing amazingly fast. Well, atleast for anything I've grown. I'm sure the growers with multiple 1000w HID bulbs are like, 'pssssshhhh'.

I took these pics the night of 1/9/08....

The first 2 are close ups right after I gave my pretty a nice foliage bath. I used a 10x jewler's loupe up against the lens of my cell phone camera....I thought the pics looked pretty groovy.

Today is 1/13 (or 1/12..not sure) and it has been 20 days since my Kushage plant first poked through the soil and unrolled its cotyledons. Since then, the plant has grown at a very pleasing rate.

I fed my baby on 1/8 and I can definately see a very positive response in the speed of growth..... which means that the organics are doing their job by promoting more cell developement.

When I germinated this seed I already had a few plants in thier vegetative stage. After males and sicknesses, I have 3 other plants besides the Kushage I have been documenting. One is a skunk strain that is many generations after a cross I made between Sweet Tooth and Skunk #1, one is just Skunk #1, and another is a bagseed from some serious dank. The dealer calls is haze but we all know those kinds of dealers..... everything with seeds is regs, everything without seeds is dank, and everything that actually is dank, is haze.

The following pics are of the bootleg haze/bagseed plant. The plant is about 18-20" tall, and to get it all in one frame with my cell camera would require me to comprimise the quality of the picture. They aren't great to begin with. So the plant is broken up into 2 photos.......I almost did a good job....the almost come together well. At least you all can get the idea.




The 3 plants besides the Kushage have been, and will continue to veg until the Kushage has grown to my specifications. I often do this on purpose so I will be forced to allow certain plants to veg for much longer than I would ever let them normally. I am usually far too anxious to watch them flower, and ultimately smoke them, to let them veg long enough to get a decent yeild. This way, I almost 'force' myself to have a bigger yeild.
