Perlite helps drain and acts as a filter to the soil so it does not come out of the bottom. I also use root control fabric at the very bottom to prevent root clogs.
The autopot instuctions online call for the perlite at the bottom. In soil I am running 6.5 - 6.7 in the autpots. My pots are very small (I made my own autopot system w/ the smartvalve) so I keep my nutes pretty high. So far so good. I don't put my plants in the autopot system until they are about 2-3" tall or so and then they are moved into 2.4 liter pots in the autopot trays. I have 2 plants per valve.
i am going to coco for my next grow. It should be interesting.
I don't know anything about rockwool, but do use rapid rooter and transplant those into soil. Can't be much different.
One last thing, make sure your feed every day at 1/3 or 1/2 strength and work your way up. Also, put an airstone or pump or both in your reservoir to keep things circulated and aerated. I use both. Also, flush every 2-3 weeks to avoid salt buildup.
good luck!
