fear's 4th fluro then HPS grow

DAY 000

High all!

I can't resist but do a fourth grow.
Smoking home made MJ is absolutely my thing.
Best quality to money ratio for sure!
So I take out some previously bought Cali Orange Bud seeds.
Nirvana seeds, the package on the bottom right :

They've been stored in the dark in the original package but not exactly cool place.
So let's see how many will grow well.
I've done the 'seed in a glass' of water trick this time.
Had them in there for 10 hours.
Out of the 10 seeds 8 sunk, 2 floated.

So I've labeled the cups I'm growing in F1-F2 and S3-S10.
I've put the fluro's in the growbox again, the familiar 6x18 = 108W tubes to start with.
Seeds planted only a few mm's below the soil, which is general seedling soil.
Here look, first light :

Away we go! In another attempt to grow my own super kickass ultranugs!

Thanks all! I'll try to live up to the expectations.

DAY 006 24/7

For a while there, I thought the seeds were bad.
It took until yesterday evening for the first green to appear at the surface.
Today at day 6 they look considerably smaller then my previous NL/BB grow @ the same age.
And only 4 of them have shown their heads so far.
I know Sativa's are supposed to germinate slower then Indicas but after three Indica grows it's kind of a shock to me.
On day 5 I was looking for my spare NLX seeds already......

Anyway here's how they look today:

Notice how the not-so-gentle watering made some of the seeds float to the surface.
I think putting them back in the soil is a bad idea, there's a big chance of damaging those fragile taproots so I'll leave 'em there.
Let's hope some more of the seeds decide to stick their heads through the soil and say 'hello'.

I'm hoping to be able to grow 3 big LST-ed females in 10 gallon containers.
See you next time!

That's probably because you're growing in soil that's near perfect.
Try running them at pH 5.0 and you'll have no smell issues I can assure you.

UPDATE DAY 011 24/7

day 5 : 4 sprouts
day 7 : 6 sprouts
day 9 : 7 sprouts
day 10 : 8 sprouts

Plants F2 AND S6 have not surfaced yet.

Wow! a total of 8! Not bad for seeds stored for 3 months @ 20-40 Celcius.
And guess what? One of the two seeds that stayed afloat on day 000 actually made it!

Funny to see that the seeds that accidently floated to the side of the cups (while watering) actually germinated first.
This could actually mean that germinating on the surface is quicker then germinating seeds buried 1 to 1,5 cm down.
Any surface germinators on this forum?

Plant S7 has a minor fungus infection at the bottom of the stem.....hence the dry soil...
You can also see this plant has a curled stem, like it had to come to the surface twice.
It bet this means that second watering I did relocated this seed after it had opened up.
It doesn't seem to be hindered by it too much, I have good hopes this one will grow allright.

Plant S3 appears to be a mutant! I dunno about this one.

That's it for now.
Have a even better grow!

UPDATE DAY 024 24/7 (from seed)

Sorry about the lack of updates lately everyone.
I managed to wreck my foot by kicking the couch.
Stuff broke, stuff snapped, stuff strechted and stuff hurt.
Bottom line is, I can't walk without metal sticks and going up two stairs to my grow and my computer hurts like hell.
I had to force myself up those stairs a few times for waterings and changing the height of the lights and repotting.
Repotting really hurt.

My plants are doing a lot better then me.
Still the 8 plants that have germinated are alive and well.
They outgrew the plastic cups and are now in temporary 7 liter pots.
Today I set aside the pain and horror of getting on my knees with my busted up foot to make a picture and snapped a photo:

As you can see all is well, but they could do with some more fluros.
I have them lying around here somewhere but I cannot mount them in the growbox until I can stand on 2 feet again without using my hands for support.
It will have to wait one or two weeks until I feel up for the task.
In the meantime I'll try to switch the light schedule to 12/12 to do some presexing and get rid of the males.
Technically speaking I'm a bit late for that really.
Who would have though my couch would determine the start of the presexing?

although you do have more growing experience than me (i'm not going back through your old grows to see if this even applies for you), in my experience SCOG or (SCROG forget the spelling) is a far more efficient way to train your plants. in my current grow i lst'd as much as i could for pot size and then ended up SCROG'n and it basicaly doubled the number of tops i had (they're all even too). my next grow i'm just planning on fimming to hell and then scrog'n to hell.

Hi wiggely!
Thanks for the advice!
But isn't SCROG exactly like LST with the exception of the screen?
It doesn't matter how you force them to grow horizontally right?

Right???

Well technically its a type of "low stress training". but in reference to this sites two very informative stickies, one entitled "LST" and the other "SCROG", the SCROG method has its advantages

Both methods from the two stickies work great, getting the plant to grow horizontal. but because of the screen in the SCROG method, all of the tops on the plants end up being the same height. when one just ties the main stem and side branches down the plant grows horizontal and produces more tops but these tops wont be of the same height. The screen method allows for shorter tops to catch up in growth while keeping all the other tops at the same height (the height of the screen). this of course allows for more buds to get more light, resulting in a greater harvest.

Thats the theory at least.

Thanks again wiggely!
I'm having trouble visualizing LST vs. SCROG like you explained.
At first I figured there would be little difference because all the buds, in either way, are at the top of the plant and thus receive maximum light.
But you made me wonder......

....if I can find myself a little screen to turn this grow into a LST vs. SCROG grow.

Last time around I compared topping vs. pinching and found no appreciatable difference whatsoever in yield.
Pinching was supposed to yield more...like you said 'in theory'...but it didn't.

I wonder......

I here ya.

but I don't see how its possible to have a grow like this with lst http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/2007/021003ff3.jpg (from forum below)

also check out pages 37-40 on this thread for a good scrog example (the most educational source, combined with the sticky in advanced methods section, on scrog'n i've found): http://forum.grasscity.com/grow-jour...-scrog-37.html

controlling the height with the screen is really useful. and from my personal experience its less stressful for the plants compared to lst (my experience of massive lst vs scrog).

the last reason i like scrog is that it is much less time consuming at least compared to the way i lst'd.

i actually made my screen with pvc pipe and string (the same string i used for lst'n), i think i got the idea from the scrog sticky.

either way your going to have an awsome grow. the difference in harvest between scrog and lst is much smaller than the difference in harvest between lst and doing nothing. can't wait to see the results.
