1st Try, CFL Grow *PICS*

Hey everyone,

I have long been one to read the journals and grow info, so here's my 1st go at growing. I am using seeds I got from bud in Hawaii. I have 5 plants in 1 1/4 gallon pots under 7 26 watt CFLs in my closet. Around day 4 I had an overwatering incident and the plants became droopy and some a bit yellow. Once I realized what had happened I transplanted them into bigger pots with 2/3 Sta-Green soil, which has no ferts in it, and about 1/3 vermiculite to lighten/loosen the soil up. They are just starting to bounce back from all that . This is now day 7. As for the pictures:

The first and last pictures are my worst looking plant. Over last night it developed those brown spots which I can't explain. My best guess is that it got a little hot in the closet last night and maybe got heat burn? Maybe it could have been left over damage from overwatering..... Maybe someone else knows...

The second picture is my best looking plant, with its twisty leaves. Just thought if I show the worst, I'd show the best haha

The third is my little set-up. I have a cardboard panel with the shiny part of a emergency blanket taped to one side I lean over the whole bit to keep light in.

So, how's everything look?

Get some more lights man. I have 6 CFLs on one plant and they looked double the number of leaves as yours. 1 CFL is not enough light man.

What color temp are your bulbs?

I vegged 6 plants under 6 6500k CFL's with work light reflectors one per plant, lst'd and they got pretty big (big enough to flower) in two months

http://forum.grasscity.com/grow-jour...lst-8-wks.html

three were female and are still flowering after 10 weeks

Your having nutrient burn, Sta-Green contains Nutrients and to a degree too much for that little seedling.

Read the directions, if not on the bag look at the site.

it says (most important part in Bold)

* Ready-to-use soil specially formulated for starting new lawns ore repairing
bare spots in established lawns
* Enriched with Sta-Green Seed & Sod Starter Fertilizer for a strong root
system and a thicker, greener lawn

For best results, wait 4-6 weeks after seedlings emerge and feed with Sta-Green, then feed regularly following Sta-Green Annual Fertilizer Program.

The name alone should tip you off as for a plant to "STA-GREEN" (Stay Green) it must have nutrients in it.

Thanks for the replies, and thanks for stopping by Dier. I got all my soil from Lowe's and I thought I had gotten one without any ferts. The only other options that I could find were the 1,000,000 different kinds of Miracle Gro soils that def. said they had fert. I posted a picture of the sta-green soil I used, what it said on the bag, and the ingredients. So is it ok to let the plants stay in the same soil if they continue to grow and not all are nute burned (2 of the 5 are) I posted another picture of the sick plant to show that the new set of leaves really came in over night, in fact more that all the other plants, so maybe it'll be ok? In response to IMGreen, my bulbs are as follows: 4 2700K, 2 6500k, and one that is somewhere in between.

Since I myself am also a first timer, take everything I say with an "As far as I know" prelude...

I would swap out the 2700k's with some 6500k for vegging as that color temp is better for vegging then the 2700k

That being said, I started flowering under CFLs (2/plant) and THAT wasn't enough lumens for them and the 40 watt 2700ks were not as cheap as the 6500k bulbs, would have been better off just going straight to the 400 watt HPS for 3 plants

That 400 watts cost $150 with shipping and I regret not flowering with it the whole time, I pretty much wasted almost $60 for the 6 40 watt cfls

I am gonna work on getting more lights in there but I have to wait a little while due to $$... I have one question for anyone that feels like answering: I overwatered around day 4 and so I transplanted them into the larger pots after a few days, watering the new soil before I put the plants in. This was done on Jan. 11th. It has now been 4 days and the soil has felt pretty dry since yesterday, using the finger 1 inch in the dirt method. I was planning on watering today for sure.... but I really don't want to overwater again since it took so long for the plants to recover. Should I wait till tomorrow to be safe, or is it OK to water today?

Just thought I'd post some new pics.....
The first pic is the plant that was sick, but it is now officially my fastest grower. It is the only one working on its next set of leaves.... you can see them if you look really close.

The second is just one of my other plants that you haven't seen before, its the one in the back left corner of the grow room.

This is day 9.

Hey stonedguy,

I am totally new at this as well. I had stretching issues, and under watering/drying of plant issues very early on. I am on day 9 or 10 I think, been very bad at tracking day progress, too stoned I guess, I dunno. Anyway, I wanted to post my day 10ish picture for comparisons...again I am only ABOUT 5 days ahead of you.

hope that link works.

I would guess that nuted soil really slowed down your progress...but again, noob here, I know nothing!

did u add any perlite to that? if not u shouldve added about a whole bag of perlite (8 dry quarts) and the whole bag of soil, that wouldve been about 30% perlite... i wouldnt recommend that soil for seedling, but that is the best soil they have at lowes, IMO.

Hey guys,

I lost the internet for like 4 days, due to some ATT technical error or something, anyways... I will post some pics in a while of how the plants are looking now. The nute burn has continued for the sick plant. It is actually looking pretty shitty now because the first set of leaves is almost all gone (burned). Strangely enough though, it is still my fastest grower as it now has its second, third, and working on the little fourth set of leaves. Thats a good looking plant you have there IslandMon, I'm hoping mine can look like that soon. Brazyjay, I didn't add any perlite, because the only perlite I could find in walmart, home depot, and lowes was the MG perlite with time release fertilizer. I did however find some vermiculite w/o fert as I stated earlier and mixed that in about 2/3 soil to 1/3 vermiculite to help aerate the soil. I am starting to get frustrated because my plants seem to be the slowest growing on Earth I think I am officially the worst plant waterer on earth too. Earlier I had posted the question on whether or not I should water last Tuesday. I ended up doing so, and the next day my house smelt all musty and the plants all looked they didn't enjoy the watering, so I assume I overwatered maybe? But I caught it early and poked aerating holes in the soil with a pen around the rim of the pot to help dry it out. This seems to have worked well because the soil began to dry up faster and the plants perked up. I am thinking that I do not need to water very much due to the fact that where I live the humidity is so high that even inside it has to be somewhat high, so maybe water doesnt evaporate as fast...? Pictures will be up soon, just need to smoke a morning bowl.....

I didn't add anything to my soil(pearlite, vermiculite, nutes), BUT I bough the best stuff the local nursery had. It boasts hi drainage, but has spagnum pete(sp) to retain moisture.
Man, I though I was the worst waterer. I did the opposite and let my pots get almost totally dry...then the 1st set of leave tips got white and crispy looking. So I basically watered them that day, and only 1 time sonce then. I am around day 12 maybe, so that worked out to watering ABOUT once a week..for me. But everything will have an effect, temps, humidity, soil used...do you cover your pots when under light?? Mine seamed to retain water better when covered.
All I want to impress on you is that there is no magical timing to water your plants. You may have to water 2 times a week, or even 1 time every two weeks...all depends on your factors bro! I'm still learning too, and having a blast doing it...hope you are not getting frustrated...if so, take a break, roll up somehting nice, and dream up your next grow idea!
damn...I type too much, so sorry

Well, I finsished the bowl and taking the pictures. I am still working on the best way to get good close shots of the plants with my camera. I check the girls all the time so it feels like they are growing SO SLOW! I hope that they eventually take off. Does anyone think that they could still be good plants? Here are pictures of all five plants:

The first picture is one of 3 healthy looking plants with no nute burns. If you look closely you can see the newest set of leaves coming in. All of my plants are working on their next set.

This second one is the sickest one. Also my fastest growing..... weird. Its first set of leaves are almost all gone from burn. I wish I could just pluck them off... that damn plant would look a lot better without them.

Third is another healthy looking one. Its working on its set of 4 leaves as well. It is the random one I posted with the sick one on day 9 for comparison.

Fourth... also healthy looking. I also think that the tips of the leaves look purplish... Maybe its wishful thinking though. I did get really good bud in Hawaii so they at least have good genetics.

Fifth is another sick one.

It was January 6th when the first plant popped out of the soil, which puts us at the beginning of day 13.

What does everyone think?
