Closet Chronic-als: My first journal WW & Hz

Welcome everyone,

This is my first ever grow journal. I'm planning on growing both the White Widow and Purple Haze strains of marijuana. My first two attempts at growing weed were failures only in that I did not produce sustantial smokeable crops. I learned a great deal about growing marijuana in this time, and i'm planning to put that knowledge to the test. My second grow did however result in a batch of mighty fudgy brownies, a space cake, and some awesome space milkshakes. I digress. Because I believe that this will be a successful grow, and I want as much help/ attention as possible, I decided to document the whole of the experience here at GrowCity. So anyone who thinks they may be able to lend a helping hand, it would be much appreciated.

Growspace – the closet in my bedroom, the room is 3'2'' wide X 3' deep X 7' high. The room was kind of ratty when I moved in, so I have sense sealed the corners and walls with duct tape, including the floor. The walls are covered in posterboard, however I believe there may not be enough of a reflective property, so I'm planning on spraying the walls with a gloss-white paint. If anyone has suggestions on what to use here i'm pretty open to ideas.

Ventilation – 2 fans, one for intake, one for outake. The intake fan is on the right wall, about 2 feet up. This fan is fairly high powered, and may need some type of duct built to direct the airflow downward. The fancase is 1 foot in diameter. The outake fan is on the left wall at the ceiling, the fan is actually in the adjacent room, and it is connected to a 6in duct that passes through the wall into the growspace. HEAT WAS A MAJOR FACTOR IN THE DEATHS OF MY LAST CROP. This new intake fan should cool the room down considerably I believe.

Light – 400w HPS, on chains so it can be lowered. I may add some flourecent bulbs, and attach them lengthwise to the walls. Any suggestions on the benefit lost/gained from that. + an auxillary light so I can work in the dark if need be.

Cirulation – 2 blizzard fans. These little fans are badass, I don't know if anyone else uses them, but they are killer, they can pack the right amount of punch to push those stems around. I'm going to place 1 in each of the front to corners and have them rotate across the plants.

Food – FoxFarm Nutes, the big bloom set. Also only brita filtered water for my babies.

That's about it. Thats the preperation, I'm beginning the germination this sunday when I get back from a festival. I think I can only grow 4 plants to maturity under these given conditions, so I'm only going to germinate 6 seeds to start off with. 3 of each strain. Both strains are from Nirvana seed, through Dr.Chronic. Those guys were awesome, I got my seeds in no time, + the 10 freebies. Anything I left out, someone let me know.

Thanks, peace out for now.
Look for pics tommorrow when my buddy brings his camera over.

Germination

So I germinated 6 seeds, 3 Widow, 3 Haze. Last night I stuck them under 2 x 40W Fluro @ 3'' and 1x400W HPS @ 3'. Both intake and outake fans are running, and the room is currently at 83 degrees. I feel like my thermometer may be off, becuase it feels as cool in my closet as it does outside. I'm putting one oscillating fan in for now to keep air exchange happening above the plants.

Here are some pics:
1) the room, intake low on the right, outake high on the left
2) outake fan connects to a piece of ducting that comes through the wall
3) the fan that connects duct, sealed w/ good ol' duct tape
4) The intake fan
5) Size comparison

more pics

1) another shot of the room, above w/ intake
2) shot of the sprouts poking up from overhead (lights moved for shot)
3) more sprouts... man I love this stuff

Since these pics i have seperated the Fluro's so that some of the HPS shines through. They are all on.

Peace till later.

If that's a switchable 400watt MH/HPS light, then I got the same one. It looks like it. Same company and all. It puts out some heat, the ballast is quite with a slight hum; it's been very reliable so far. I'm going to upgrade to the air coolable reflector my next grow. Best of luck to you.

Your setup looks killer man... The plants will love it. As for the heat, look into a Cooltube. I hear they do any unbelievable job of controlling the heat. CO2 generators can also help your plants deal with the higher temps.

I'd say you'll be just fine with the heat thats a good set-up. I would however, use 2 surge protectors one for the HPS and one for everything else.

Oh, and point one of your circulating fans right at the light this will help keep it cooler in there. also, I'd say that if you do a good job growing them, 2 plants will be the max.

I have 3 in a closet that is 41" wide by 6.5' long and shit you tell me how the F**k I'm going to be able to do any thing with the back one?

Thank God Its a hydro grow and I don't have to much, feed'em from the front.

However I did start with 6, had to chop 3 down, natural hermies, from a hermie and skunk mix.

If you buy one you will not beleive the difference. Your temperature will be lower and your humidity will be raised. I have 25C at 10 inchs of my 8 days old plants with an aircooled 400 MH. You need at least a vortex 4" or something similar for ventilation.

Nice grow man! Good luck!

Cool Tube Sounds Cool

Thanks folks for all the replys/ advice. In response to your question Whodi, it is not the switchable ballast, it is just an HPS, however the same guy that sells my lamps sells the one your talking about too. It's a recommended website from this forum, hi-tech garden supply. I actually live near the store, its a great shop, and the guy who runs it all, Wade, has these great dogs that are always there, and there is always Marley blasting from his stereo. As for the cool tube idea... sounds sweet, I was actually thinking about that anyway, but you all re-affirmed it in my head. I'm gonna build one this weekend. Any suggestions? I heard you can use candle hurricanes. Is there a good size? how should I connect it? should I attach a mini-pc-fan to part of it for ventilation? should i attach it to a duct then maybe a fan? I dunno tell me what you all think.

+ rep for everyone thats helping Thanks

Peace

I'm wondering what kind of soil I should add to my Fox Farms Ocean Organic soil. I'd just get 2 bags but there like 40 bucks a piece or somethin like that. so is there some very nuetral soil i can mix with the fox farm to cut down on price?

Urgent: 3 sprouts drooping

Hey all, this morning when I left for a gig all six sprouts looked great. when I got home at 4, 3 were completely drooped over, like leaves touching soil... what should I do, the soil seemed very dry so I saturated it with water. today was their watering day anyways. any help?

Hey man.

Grow room and set up look great, strain is great, suppliers look good. All looks well so far. Sounds like your babies got under watered that is if the soil was bone dry. Give them a good drink and they should perk up within 2 hours. I have under watered mine occasionally and when I water them they perk up in front of my eyes. Anyway, I am now subscribed to this thread so I will be watching. Good luck this time around.

Thank a lot for stopping by VTEC. I've seen your grows... means a lot that you're helping me out.

I did water them, two came back to full health, however there is one they may not be able to be saved. realistically I only have for 2 or 3 plants anyway. so I'm not to concerned. Thanks to everyone who's checking / reading this. I'll have pics / any major updates on Wednesday. I'm currently installing a cool tube. It's pretty nice, but I can't seem to get the glass into the metal. We'll see... any suggestions?

Peace all
