I learned this one that hard way. Just go with a slightly lower temperature-rated synthetic bag and you will be good to go. |
qft.
Synthetic all the way, if you are going to be in any kind of backcountry.
My top 3 essentials:
Water Filter: You NEED this. Getting a stomach virus or some kind of beaver-poop illness will never be fun.
Good Knife: Get a fixed blade knife. It will hold up better, be stronger, and able to do more things. You can dig with it, cut small to medium branches, use it as a mini axe, hammer. All kinds of stuff that a folder can't do.
Fire Starting Materials: Worst case scenario, if you are stuck in the cold overnight, and for some reason you don't have your sleeping bag, a fire is the only thing that's going to save you from hypothermia and animals.
This obviously goes along with all of the normal stuff, such as a tent, sleeping bag, good backpack, hiking boots, a good hat, headlamp with EXTRA BATTERIES (!!!), emergency kit.
