I will preface this next part with a little info; I don't hunt, never have. I own a compound bow that I've had forever, just for target shooting.

"Alright, but I'm gonna miss" I say and grab the bow. All I had was one slightly bent aluminum arrow, which didn't have a tip because I lodged it in a tree and broke it pulling it out.

So I grab the bow, and since the rabbit is only 30 or so feet away I don't bother to put the pull strings on the wheels, meaning the bow only has about 30 pounds of pressure when I draw it. So I take aim at the thing, which is stationary by a fence, and say "Theres no fucking way I'm gonna hit this thing".

Well yeah, I guess there was a fucking way. Because I let go, and watched it impact dead center on the side of the rabbit, making a loud THUMP! The rabbit immediately turned and ran into the woods, while I was still staring in shock.

The situation immediately turned from this to this to this .

Me and my freinds ran into the woods to see where it went, and there it was. Not 15 feet away from where it was hit, lying on the ground. It twitched for a little while, and then died right there. No blood, you could barely see the impact spot.

Holy shit. I felt like a fucking murderer. I buried the poor little fella, we had a funeral for him on the spot. Completely killed my high.

Now I don't feel so bad about it, as rabbits are essentially big squirrels, and people hunt them all the time....but I live in MA.

I'm a pacifist, I would never (barring this time) hurt an animal, I used to work at a kennel for Christs sake. Funny thing is people used to bring their rabbits there too when they went on vacation and didn't want to leave them home. Good thing I don't work there anymore

Moral of the story: Don't shoot at what you don't intend on killing. I'm not gonna let this ruin my week, but I do (and probably deserve to) feel like an asshole.

Fucking strange week.
at least you're honest with yourself that what you did was bad even though you didn't mean to do it. life's about learning from mistakes and experiences.

I accidentally shot a bird with my high powered BB gun once. It looked so peaceful. I think I ended up throwing its copse over into my neighbors garden.

Are you completely out of your damn mind? If I ever shot one of my dogs even accidentally, air rifle or not, I would probably shoot myself in the foot to make up for it.

As for the OP, I wouldn't look too far into this one. Terrible things happen, even when we don't mean them to, and you really had no intention of hurting this rabbit. With a shot like that, even at 30 pounds, there is a very good chance that he passed quickly (it really doesn't take much to bring down a Cotton Tail, even a youth bow will work effectively).

I hunt small game on and off in the warmer months, but I can also sympathize with the realization that you've just killed something that you didn't mean to.

I was hunting during a camping trip just last week, as a matter of fact, and saw what seemed to be a very large bird about 30 yards away in a pine tree. Perfectly ethical shot, no obstructions at all. I raised my rifle, took the shot, and watched a quarter of what I had originally pointed my gun at fall from the tree. Turns out that what I was seeing was a bit of an illusion, and that there was a branch just behind the bird itself that made him look immensely larger than he was, only being several inches long in actuality.

We all learn lessons in strange ways, and I doubt you'll be making this mistake again any time soon. Never point your bow at something you don't intend on killing.

Re: Today I Got High and Murdered a Bunny Rabbit

One time my friend and I were just driving down the road and a possum walks casually out infront of us like 50 yards up the road when we were doing about 45. It just looked at us with a solid expression on his face as we hit him A loud thud was heard.

But he didn't even try to move lol it was weird.

the bb gun i shoot my dogs with around the yard isnt strong enough to
harm them from any distance. sometime my cousins and i shoot each other in the ass with it. but no closer than 25 yards. and for the record, yes i am crazy. people around here pay my grandaddy to "put down" horses and cows and whatnot. our favorite tool-of-the-trade is our M-7 stag we bought together as a gift to ourselves. so yeah, im fucked up in the head i enjoy killing things. is there a problem?

I eat peter cottontails. rabbits are sooooo delicious in broth with carrots and celery

Re: Today I Got High and Murdered a Bunny Rabbit

You should of cooked that rabbit since it was dead.

I'm no animal killer but if that happend to me, I would of skinned it, and cooked it. Good experience, I say.
