Re: I grow other plants too.

OSG, great job on the garden, it looks really amazing. What vegetables are you growing? I can see various peppers and tomato plants, but I'm wondering what else is brewing in that garden. Do you have any favorite varieties of tomatoes and peppers?

Although I've only grown the kind herb once with a friend from college, I started a small vegetable garden last summer, probably harvested a couple hundred tomatoes, half dozen butternut squash, various jalapeños and habañeros, and lots of herbs. This year I decided to expand it seriously, especially to include both miniature and regular sized eggplant (Black Beauty), lots of heirloom tomatoes like Genovese, White Wonder, and German Striped, a few fast growing cherry tomatoes, yellow squash, Brussels sprouts, and strawberries. We have a pretty good climate and excellent soil in the Hudson Valley, so I think I should have a pretty good result. I just love cooking with homegrown ingredients, nothing like it in the world! I am also really into cuisine, always read your posts about what's for dinner at OSG's place!

Re: I grow other plants too.

We have cherry tomatoes, roma tomatoes, several kinds of hot and mild peppers, cabbage, bok choy, two or three kinds of lettuce, oregano, mint, basil of several flavors (lemon, italian, thai, and one I forget), thyme, cucumbers and zucchini. Some of them are in two other slightly smaller gardens out back.

I know I'm forgetting something. My wife is always planting new stuff and not telling me. Then again I don't tell her when I start growing a new strain, I just surprise her with the buds

Re: I grow other plants too.

Sounds like a nice garden; I'm sure it'll provide a solid yield for summertime cooking events, and you probably have a good climate out in western PA to grow that type of stuff. I'm really jealous of the cucumbers, I love gazpacho but didn't have room in my garden for this year due to the massive squash vines, all the tomatoes, etc. Nevertheless, I'm surprised to hear you aren't growing any crazy heirloom or homemade strains though, you're pretty famous for your genetic manipulation of plants! Have you ever thought about trying to make your own strain of vegetables?

I really enjoy growing, it's just unfortunate I have such a small plot of land in a heavily populated suburban area. I dug up every sunny area I could, used a bunch of containers, and tried to squeeze things as tight as possible. If I ever get my own land, I'd like to expand the garden considerably to try a lot of different types of winter squash, melons, Asian varieties of eggplant, and pumpkins. We'll see though. I'm an avid cook so fresh food makes a big difference to me!

Re: I grow other plants too.

I'm growing some tomatoes and an assortment of peppers and herbs in some containers.

We've finally decided to cut down a tree in our yard so that we can put in a small vegetable garden next summer. We're going to spend this summer digging the beds and making compost so it'll be ready in the spring.

Re: I grow other plants too.

Im not growing these, but they are at my sites as a good indicator of fertile soil,a nd acidic soil of roughly 6.0-6.5 so these are my flowers lol I have 9 in all in the general area of my sites! And up to this year ive never seen 1 here in my state!
