Hell yeah man, we hit up the Clark Fork, the St. Regis, and the Clearwater all the time.

Re: Anybody here fly-fish?

I've been fly-fishing for about 20 yrs now off and on and am only 25 years old. I live near Cincinnati and we don't have any trout around this area so I use spinning tackle but I'll use it every now and then or when I go trout fishing in West Virginia, Virginia and Michigan. At one time I was the youngest member of the Buckeye United Fly-Fishers, an Ohio fly-fishing club.

Re: Anybody here fly-fish?

I'm glad to see that I am not the only stoner fly fisherman, haha. I have been fly fishing all of my life, as well as tying my own flies for a majority of the time. I do most of my fly fishing in NJ and West Virginia. There are some great little no name streams in WV that have native brookies and browns and I could spend weeks pulling them in, haha.

Re: Anybody here fly-fish?

here's some pics from my trip home to oregon after my buddy came and picked me up in Livingston, Montana. taken sept 07.

an aptly named river in the montana absarokas. This hole must have had 100 trout in it. amazing. cutts, rainbows, cuttbows, and brookies were caught in this hole. lots of them.

2 yellowstone cutts below. a little larger than average for the hole. i find the lower cutt to be especially stunning.

we were both catching fish like mad. 2 brookies

soda butte creek cutt in YNP.

see the scuf marks? too many people fishing sbc these days.

ya, we fished alot of bh hares ears back then. We were also fishing ehcs at both spots and did pretty well. The fish that usually take nymphs are a little bigger, and we take pics of the bigger fish, thats' why it ssems like we only fish wet. Although, I'm glad to say that all of my fish have been caught on dries since february 08', amd I've gone out quite a few times since then. It's way more fun that way, and the big fish taking nymphs thing isn't entirely true all the time.

I plan on posting a few pics of my favorite eastern oregon location where we discovered how cool hopper fishing was.

Re: Anybody here fly-fish?

Just pulled my Dad's old Fly Rod from the case to give it a good once over before I start my 2009 fishing season. She definitely needs new float line, not to mention the backing is totally decimated, so I'll be re-equipping the weight of my rod in the coming week or two.

I'm very serious about catching fish this year, as I had nothing but terrible luck in 2008, hooking into absolutely nothing (I mean it, I didn't even get a nibble out of ten months of fishing, and I've been doing it my entire life. Just a bad year.). My spirits were dampened severely last season, so I'm starting this year off anew, researching all of the streams I hit for particular fly patterns that happen to be hitting well, current strength, whether the fish are hiding in pools, so on and so forth.

I'm re-lining with your basic, run of the mill backing and plan on buying a spool of six-weight Scientific Angler's Sharkskin Floatline. The majority of Colorado's fishing revolves around Trout, particularly Brown, Cutthroat and Rainbow, so six-weight should be plenty even if I snag into a beast.

I also need to invest in a pair of Waders, as the only pair I've ever owned has been an eight dollar piece of Polyester from Wal-Mart that ruptured as soon as I took them into a strong current. I've seen some incredible deals on Craigslist, so we'll see what happens with those in due time.

As far as spots are concerned, I'm pretty excited on doing a good days hike in Rocky Mountain National Park, intersecting with the river and searching for the elusive Greenback Cutthroat, a pretty rare catch in Colorado unless you happen to be at that particular area of the river.

So help me god, I am going to break this fishing curse if it is the last fucking thing I do on this planet.

Oh, man, I didn't catch that one. I take no credit at all for the shot, either.

No, it was caught about 70 miles north of me in Rocky Mountain National Park, a spot I plan on hitting here fairly soon.

Wow!! Them pictures are breathtaking! I actually came back after a smoke to check them out again!
I am a big Flyfisherman. I have always fished the Adirondacks in upstate NY growing up. I just started to flyfish the Salt for some Stripers and Blues.
again, thanks for sharing the photos!

Re: Anybody here fly-fish?

twice a year i go up north for a weekend of trout fishing. its usually the same crowd. my dad and his friends. some of which or older and much more experienced than i am. i have been going up there for about 16 years now, and i never once have tried to fly fish.. the older guys that go up with us swear by them. one guys pole is about 20 feet long!!! these guys pull some serious trout out of the streams too. so i think its about time i convert.

Re: Anybody here fly-fish?

fished over in central OR on the fall river last weekend. It's a spring creek that has a constant flow and temp, which makes it an excellent option for winter trout fishing. fishing was decent. bwo's and midges were on the water, but we got a large fish to take a size 14 royal trude. that was probably the pinnacle of the day. well, my friend caught it, but I chose the fly. It was a really easy place to present the fly too. It happened perfectly. we caught him at the end of the day. that doesn't usually happen with winter fishing. my friend was all stoned off hashplant(such an oldskool smell...in my opinion. reminds me of stuff I used to get), and we were exploring a new area that we didn't think held that many fish. ..so, kind of an epic day.

I like fishing the fall because it's usually pretty slow and always crystal clear, and you can see the fish you're fishing for....It's swell

Re: Anybody here fly-fish?

I love fishing in the winter! Absolutely no one around, snow all over, and the trout are not as wary. There was a small little hatch going on two days ago despite the temps, and the fish were just hammering my midge offering! I ended up with 4 browns coming to the hand today, including a lunker taken on a wooly bugger that was about 15 inches and fat like a football. I missed about double that. Only problem is, it took about 6 hours to feel my toes again.

How is the winter fishing out west? Anyone get out lately?

Re: Anybody here fly-fish?

I love traveling to North Georgia/Carolina and trout fishing the rivers and streams up there. I also do some pond fishing down around my area.

Re: Anybody here fly-fish?

I've never fly fished inland in NC, but every spring I hit the OBX and get some blues on the fly. If you ever try it for blues, don't forget a real strong leader. I use about 8 inches of steel at the end of heavy tippet to deal with their teeth.
