If you're fishing for trout and they're wild, you generally should put them back. If not that, please limit your limit. Hatchery trout are a completely different subject. So are brook trout east of the mississipi. They often overpopulate high lakes and compete with native cutt-throat and rainbows in streams. They're quite tasty too!

Re: Fishing

Definately- I love getting out early in the morning before sunrise. I'm not a huge fan of sunset- its supposed to be a good time but I never have any luck. I still need to try going late night still.

Re: Fishing

I've been fishing my entire life!

My dad just gave me his old fly fishing setup as a gift, since I live in Colorado and most of his fishing is done trolling on Lake Michigan and he very rarely makes it out to the rivers and tributaries around him. My buddy recently bought his own rod, since fly fishing is almost a necessity when fishing in Colorado, and we went out to the Arkansas River last weekend. We didn't catch anything, to be honest with you, but it was a very nice area and we did get quite a bit of practice in with our new supplies.

In Colorado, our fishery primarily consists of Rainbow, Brown, Brook, and Cutthroat Trout, as well as Kokanee Salmon, Crappie, Bluegill, and even Pike on occasion. They mostly feed on Nymphies and Caddis, so you do need flies that are semi sinking and decently weighted line with at least a six pound test tippet (or higher) and trout leaders.

I've been prepapring all of my equipment today, because this weekend we're hitting a spot known as the Dream Stream, which is about sixty miles west through the mountains at the tailwaters of the South Platte River. Here's an overview that I found on another site:

Quote:
With a nickname like the Dream Stream, you know it has potential. Also known as Spinney
Mountain Ranch, this three mile long Colorado tailwater section of the South Platte River is nestled
in the windswept high mountain plain of South Park. Flowing out of Spinney Mountain Reservoir,
meandering through prime big trout habitat, the river eventually flows into Eleven Mile Reservoir.

A classic Colorado tailwater, the fish and aquatic life in the Dream Stream enjoy fairly consistent
year round temperatures. An abundance of scuds, midges, mayflys, and caddisflys make up the
majority of the trout's diet. These trout will also feed on hoppers, trout fry, eggs, and even mice if
the opportunity presents itself--not to mention all the food washed out of Spinney Mountain
Reservoir!

The Dream Stream portion of The South Platte River is public, and has easy bank access making
this section a very popular destination for Colorado fly fisherman. These trout that can grow to
gargantuan proportions have learned how to avoid detection and humble even the most skilled
anglers. That is not to say that they can't be caught . . .

Although unpredictable wind and weather combined with sometimes fussy fish scare many an
angler away from The Dream Stream, the dedicated fly fisherman can experience some of the best
days of trout fishing imaginable, catching multiple Spinney Mountain Ranch trophies in a single
day!!!!

Is it safe to say that I'm just a wee bit excited?

Re: Fishing

You cant beat flats fishing in Florida. Hooking up with monster reds or getting in the middle of a school of trout, always a great day of fishing.
Going to the West cost during snook and tarpon seasons is awesome too.

Re: Fishing

Northern Lake Michigan and Lake Superior are my favorite places to go fishing. And I'm less than 50 miles from each.

Usually I fish Walleye, Northern Pike, Salmon, Rock Bass, Trout, and Yellow Perch. Yum.

Nothing like a day at the lake with a couple joints and a six pack.

not a whole hell of alot man. you need a rod, a reel with line, and some bait/ tackle. oh yeah and a large sack of weed. depending where you live will dictate what kind of gear... satlwater= bigger heavyer stuff, and freshwater you would use lighter gear. have fun man!!

Yeah, go to Dick's Sporting Goods and buy one of their twenty dollar rods, a set of hooks and bobbers (If you're planning on casting and letting the bait sit, rather than casting and retrieving). Depending on where you fish, it's better to start off with a thinner line (Something along the lines of 6-pound test) rather than going all out and throwing 20-pound test on a reel that can only handle ten yards of it. I see this all the time.

Now, if you're planning on Fly Fishing, I know where you can find a fairly good and inexpensive setup to get you started, and I can also point you in the direction of a miriad of information regarding the different line knots that you'll need to know to set up your reel.

Re: Fishing

Yup, got a boat.

I mostly use my trolling motor to troll for pickerel (walleye) or trout early in the mornin'.

I don't get up to Lake Ontario much, but its fun catching massive salmon.
