I just got a job at a 5-star restraunt that gets ton of buiseness. I have never been a dishwasher for a job before but i was like damn 8-9$ an hour to wash dishes thats a fucking steal! I've never done dishes for a restraunt or as a job, only at my house but i see it being totally different then just putting some dishes in the washer.. Any Blades out there have jobs as a Dishwasher?? what should i expect or if you have any advice?? Like is it a huge dishwasher that you just shut down on all the dishes and it powerwashes it for like 5 minutes??? Im not worried at all seeing as i got an interview and hired on the spot im just more curious of what i got myself into?
I worked for a month in an Pyraneean hotel as a dishwasher. Basically, you get the plates and cutlery, usually with scraps on; throw the crap away, stack plates into a tray, cutlery had a separate one, rinse the plates, slide it into a cleaner; it comes out...repeat process many, many times in a night... However, I also did other duties, during cleanup, taking rubbish out etc, cleaning up the trays of food, and the cooking trays was a bastard though as you have to get burnt stains off and stuff. I was moved around a bit though, I got to work in the kitchen, preparing food, some days; and for a period I was put on service, as i'd done it before and I speak fluent english so it helped get me away from the horrid machine. Sorry, hope I haven't disheartened you too much. Most jobs are a bitch, but it's still cash in the pocket.
Expect to get dirty and wash dishes all day. Nasty dishes, hot ass pans, skillets, etc. You gotta becareful that you don't burn yourself with the water and you are careful with all the cleaning chemicals. Most of them are nothing to worry about but there are certain ones that require you to wear gloves but that doesn't happen that often. Your other duties will be help around the kitchen as well for cleaning up or even getting on the line if you show interest in cooking. It's really not that bad but your hands are gonna get dried out to shit. And yes it usually a oversized dishwasher that you throw them in but you have to rinse most of the shit off first.
lol this. i dont really know what you would expect when you applied for a job as a dishwasher. until the dishes become sentient and plan to take over the world and the only way to defeat them is washing off all the food, your job is pretty damn boring
Thanks guys especially Ralta and Madkronik and i honestly didn't know what to expect i mean ive never been in the back of the kitchen, i diddnt know if the cooks/wait staff are going to have me do all types of stuff. Plus i was wandering if Dishwasher also ment like Janitor responsibities because when they hired me all they said is i'd be doing dishwashing and preparing food. so i was like wait im preparing food to what else am i doing, and i asked she just said keep stuff prepped. sooo...and i was wandering do Dishwashers get part of the Tips that the waiters make or are we just the Scum in the back of the kitchen?
Dishwashing isn't that bad for a while but you will get tired of it. Do well and move up to food expediter like zro420 mentioned...then you get tips and don't have to stand in the steam all night. Dish washing was my first job and I liked it...but I was at a summer camp on a sick lake and whenever I was done with dishes I had free time to blaze and explore the forest.
8-9 an hour to wash dishes is garbage....actually i dunno cus im canadian and currency is different but dishwashing here is $11 an hour minimum
Ya well i just went back to do some W-4 forms and what not and my final pay is 8.50 an hour, which i mean i've had better starting jobs doing remodeling but i think this will be a good experince for me to get into the Cooking/restraunt service for the future. I got a huge ass handbook on things i need to study, didnt think it was going to be like 20 pages full of how to dish wash and what to do but i guess thats what it takes. I also have to take 3 quizes...which i've never had to do at a job lol.
I hope so! ha You should see the uniform i get aha its a chinese bistro so i have to wear like chinese kinda type stuff like one of those jackets that button up its pretty cool. but i dont think anyone that works there is chinese. I start tommorow and i applied today so i got some reading to do.
Whatever you do, don't go to the hospital if you fuck up, they will drug test you Learn some spanish, and expect to wash a lot of dishes... and fast. gl, what restaurant?
YO man you crazy mother licker ha, thanks for the job its not that great seeing as its a metiocre job but im just trying to get cash flowin for college and insurance. Get money get paid

I don't really know what you should expect being a dishwasher. If I had to guess, I'd think you'd be washing a lot of plates, glasses, and utensils that have been previously used by customers in the place you work at.
Expect permanent raisin fingers hahaha. No seriously though, that's the worst part, makes you feel like a 80 year old.
ok, this shit is gay. I apoiked for a cook position. My first day they have me helping with dishes. Second day still trying on dishes while doing some prep work and other jobs. I've been googling this but can't find anything commenting on it but I feel like being a dishwasher has to be one of the most unhealthy jobs. The smell of the sanitizer and dish cleaning material is bothering my lungs. I remember a friend of mine saying how he used to have respiratory problems from being a dishwasher. What do others think about this? This shit can't be healthy at all.
