Legalizing Marijuana = Higher Prices? WTF?

I've got to vent about something. I've been reading on the legalization of marijuana and I found something that I think is very fucking stupid. There are a lot of potheads who DONT want marijuana legalized because they think it would increase the price. It is my belief that they think the price of weed would be the same but with taxes. Does anyone else find that kind of thinking, well, retarded?

Here's why I disagree:

1) Risk factor - One of the main reasons the price of marijuana would go down is that currently, there are many people that have to take risks. The growers, the transporters, and the dealers all take great risk in getting the weed to you. They arent going to want extra money for that risk? If there's no legal risk involved, then there's no reason to sell it at a high price; people will look elsewhere.

2) Mass production - Think about cars. If cars were not mass produced in a factory, but hand made in a limited number, that will drive up the price tremendously. Compare that to weed: Since it's legal, there would be no risk in growing it. Instead of being grown somone's grow room or secret location out in the woods, people could grow it out in the open just like farming and those limitations would be gone.

To put it simply, the limitations to get it to you removed and the supply going up means lower prices. I'd be happy to pay high taxes on weed as long as it's lower then the prices are now.

If I am wrong and you have reason to believe prices would go up, please, help me figure it out because I cannot register in my head prices going UP after legalization. Or am I right and the people thinking the prices going up dont use their heads?

In general, stoners are the last people who would be boned up on economic theory. So ignore them, they don't know what the fuck they are talking about.

Think about it: Even if it was made legal, how on earth would that make the price go *up*? Staying the same... well I can believe that. But it's already a completely illegal product that gets hunted down by hundreds of agents every day. It can't get any more pricier.

Ok heres an example of what legalization will do to prices. In Canada, Cuban cigars go for around 75 bucks. Thats not 75 bucks for a box thats 75 bucks for ONE cigar...You can regularly buy a box (12) for around a hundred bucks.

Plus there are alot of other factors involved with legalization. If the government legalized it, I'm sure there would be taxes on paraphernalia. Now in Louisiana illegal paraphernalia must have a tax stamp on it. But there shouldn't really be a reason why the price goes up. With legalization and decriminalization of that shit so many middlemen would be out of jobs which basically means less markup on buying herb. And if they legalized it...why buy it when you can grow it? <3

P.S. Im sure the goverment would regulate the shit out of it with taxes which MAY make the price go up.

Wow nice. The way you said it, it made me realize that the gov't may just legalize it but make the price so high in purpose to curb use. Reminds me of tobacco and really high taxes to stop people from smoking cigarettes.

The only thing I can say against that is that I think if that were the case, people would ultimetely rebel against bullshit taxes. The gov't taxing as to make high prices would mean nobody would buy it when they will just go back to getting off the streets for cheaper.

does "legalization" still mean that cultivation is illegal?

if its a nice cigar, thats not a bad price at all man..........
fine cigars are commonly a few hundred dollars, and thats a price people pay due to the better quality

cubans have some nice cigars, but there can be much better found

Well, if it is legalized it would probably be heavily taxed, so that might be the rational behind the higher prices arguement, but i think it would probably go down.

Well... Take in consideration how much herb is being bought/selled illegally now. Keep the same street prices and add taxes to that. That'd mean the prices'd go up a tad.

Nevertheless I pity the governmnet when I think about all the money they lose keeping cannbis illegal. But i guess that the governments morals and ethics help 'em keep it criminalised, but hey, their loss...

I say let 'em tax tha shit outta it...the price is still goin' down! With large scale production, it'll still cost way less to buy it in the store than under the current market prices...plus, if we can grow it legally ourselves, who cares?
