I can see the way that your looking at this, from a media standpoint. Don't get me wrong, I have seen the rise in prescription medication in children that is not needed, and think it is horrible, but that doesn't justify that the medication is "bad" in itself.

Medications like concerta, which I am currently on, is a very safe medication in the way that it has minor to no side effects, and dosage is easy to control.

A huge contributing factor to this whole debate is what ADD/ADHD medications should be used for, and what should be expected from them. People tend to think that these medications will "cure" ADD/ADHD symptoms, when in fact that is far from the truth. What I use the medication for is to help with focus so then I can compound on that with learning study skills. You cannot expect everything from the drug.

Another huge contributing factor to this issue is the fact that kids are getting prescribed at a very young age. This is the big Media/PR issue that is giving these medications bad names. Doctors are prescribing medications without trying other methods first, and to young children (When the brain is still rapidly forming). What kid has to sit down and do 3 hours of homework a night? This is the part that I agree with you on. It's working on alternatives first, then after a thorough evaluation medication should be considered, but not necessarily prescribed.

Just a few notes on your last post (I really do not want a flame war, I just want understanding).
When you say "Chronic use" this is by no means what is happening with anyone on these medications who is being looked after by a doctor. If someone is determent to be on 36 Mg of a certain medication, and this has been deemed the right dosage, it is not "Chronic use" if the user takes it when they are instructed to do so.

Also where are your sources for your facts? "methylphenidate being the ingreident in ritilan,kids shoudnt be on this shit,only 5% of kids put on these drugs actully need them." What determines if an individual actually needs the medication?

Again, not to hijack a thread, or start a flame war. I just want to see his prospective.

i took this test today and unintentionally failed the shit outta it.... computer screen that flashes 4,5,8,and 16 shaped figures at you and you click the spacebar whenever a 5,8,and 16 come up (they flash for like a quarter second) lasted like 25 minutes and you were monitered by head movement, leg movement, overall movement... reaction time, etc...

Your lucky you got to do this. I did 20 hours of testing, twice, just to make sure that these medications would help me. I did the same test you did but looked at the screen for an hour. My IQ was very high but my former school work didn't show my capabilities at all.

REMEMBER adhd is just an unused adaptation. I was told that by my doctor as a kid also, he said most of the warriors had this and its perfect for the battle fields because you think/act quick. Well anyways i'd suggest taking a martial art you'll have a blast and learn fast, trust me i know by personal experience

bro i play football, lax, basketball, and if i ever get any free time i wanna start boxing.
if i dont have it in school, i fail - if i do have it, im very successful, more focused, and normally more talkitive (w.o being distracted)
today i took a 10mg addy xr 30 mins before a 2 and a half hour football practice, it was my best practice of the year, it didnt make me a "zombie", just more interested and motivated in what i was doing/accomplishing

lol you had all those side effects cause its pretty much artifical speed,i hate how so many parents are so uneducated,alot of parents dont know that there kids are on a hardcore drug.

stimulates such as speed make it very difficult to sleep,an makes it hard to eat,when i was in 7th grade,i loved taking addys,i used to buy em off this kid who didnt know they were worth anything

got the 30mg XRs for 50cents a pop,threw out a 8 month peroid i was taking em everyday,but good thing i smartend up,i lost like 20 pounds an looked horribal after just 8 months.sure since i was all sped up on pharmaceutical speed,i was able to concetrate a little more on school work,an enjoyed school alot better cause i was all fucked up lol.

but most people should be able to foucus without this shit,every doc ive talked to have told me the same thing,its all over sold,the majority does not need this shit,people might not agree but its fact,there are some that do but most dont.

the con's of the drug totally outweigh the pro's.do as much reasearch as you can before putting this shit in your body an ask your self if its worth it,so many kids brought up on this shit as a kid,have fucked aspects of there lifes cause of it,an again im not saying this for everyone,but the negatives totally outweigh the positves for most.

i went to a nuerologist today, was in the office for probably 20 minutes and he just asked me a few questions and had me fill out a thing with symptoms like check which ones I have and he was like

"hmmm according to these answers you have strong likleyhood of ADD so I'm going to write you a prescription of 10mg focalin XR's."

not complicated tests or any shit hahah...

idk if focalin is good tho, gotta try it.

he said i couldnt get adderall when i brought up the name because it's abusable and the dumbass thinks that focalin isnt? lol
