I got a check in the mail for $5997... halp meh.

I believe the thing is bullshit, but I got a letter from a company in Canada (I live in the U.S.) saying I won a General Market Survey. "and you are entitled for the Sum of $150,000.00 US" "You are therefore advised to contact your claim agent for further instructions."
Later it says "Enclosed is a check of $5,997.00 US dollars which is a portion of your winnings available for you to pay the Non-Residential Govt. Service Tax (GST) payable to your tax agent as stated below;"
Anyone have any idea if this is most likely a check scam? I don't think i'm going to act on it, but I was wondering just in case. I heard on the news that getting a check asking for money back is usually a scam, like those emails you get from an African President or something.

You really have to ask??

I could tell it was a scam before I even read the thread, the title says it all.

If it's too good to be true, it probably is. If you think there might actually be some validity to the "check," you're being as gullible as the scammers want you to be.

Are there exclamation marks on the check?

Was it printed on some kind of cracker?

Well for one thing I doubt you can even cash it. Something would prove to be wrong..wouldn't go through.

Second if you were able to some how cash it..it will fuck you later.

It's a scam....

What they do is get you to cash the check....you give the cash to the 'agent'...by the time the check runs through, they end up not being able to find the bank who issued it..then your bank ends up coming after you for the money, which you already gave away, and all fees associated, such as the bounced check fees, overdraft fees, etc.

Either shred that letter or report it to your local authorities so others don't get scammed, as well...

I got one telling me I won 100 million dollars! I sent away the 500 dollar deposit fee about a year ago. Still waiting on my 100 million! Im gunna be so rich

i would take it to the authorities for two reasons..

1: you turn it in you cant get in trouble they'l just shred it and track the scammers, help other people out...

2: turns out it is a miraculously real check and you somehow did win, they will let you know this...

#1 is probably your likely chance

I know a way of cashing that cheque - i'll split it with you

all you need to do is send the cheque to me and $500 in cash

once it goes through i'll give you back the $500 out of my half

you know it makes sense
