origin of the word marijuana

I was curious as to the origins of the word marijuana, i heard it was used to make cannabis sound foreign and dangerous..although im not sure if this is true

but i would like to know so help is appreciated

the word "marijuana" originated in Mexico. It's basically the mexican way of saying "Mary Jane".

The gubbamint chose to use this word to make marijuana sound foreign and dangerous.

According to WikiPedia:

The term marijuana for cannabis, in English-language usage, dates to the end of the 1800s. One theory is that anti-cannabis crusaders popularized the term to take advantage of fears of Spanish immigrants carrying the drug[1] A report by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Narcotics had found, "This abuse of the drug is noted among the Latin-American or Spanish-speaking population. The sale of cannabis cigarettes occurs to a considerable degree in States along the Mexican border and in cities of the Southwest and West, as well as in New York City and, in fact, wherever there are settlements of Latin Americans."[2] According to Jack Herer, William Randolph Hearst, "through pervasive and repetitive use, pounded the obscure Mexican slang word 'marijuana' into the English-speaking American consciousness. Meanwhile, the word 'hemp' was discarded and 'cannabis,' the scientific term, was ignored and buried. The actual Spanish word for hemp is â€œcÃ¡Ã±amo.â€ But using a Mexican â€œSonoranâ€ colloquialism â€“ marijuana, often Anglicized as â€œmarihuanaâ€ â€“ guaranteed that few would realize that the proper terms for one of the chief natural medicines, 'cannabis,' and for the premiere industrial resource, 'hemp,' had been pushed out of the language."[3]

William C. Woodward, M.D., lobbyist for the American Medical Association before the U.S. Congress at hearings for the 1937 Marihuana Tax Act, testified, "The term 'marihuana' is a mongrel word that has crept into this country over the Mexican border and has no general meaning, except as it relates to Cannabis preparations for smoking. It is not recognized in medicine..."[4]

The origin of the Spanish word is uncertain.[5] Traditional association with the personal name MarÃa Juana ("Mary Jane") is probably a folk etymology.[6]

The international term is "cannabis," hence its use in global legal instruments such as the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. U.S. laws, such as the Controlled Substances Act, often use the term "marihuana" or "marijuana," and many cannabis reform organizations, such as the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws and the Marijuana Policy Project, also use this term.

My impression has alway been what's stated above...

It was a Mexican word... used in place of the English word Hemp in order to separate and vilify one portion of the plant (and an Ethnic group)...

In the South-west of the 1920's... Mexican labor was cheap and plentiful. Then, when the nation hit the skids in the 30's... there were not enough jobs for the American population.. let alone the immigrant population...

So, they vilified the Mexican word for the drug side of the plant... and used it to control the Mexican population in the SW...

All the while keeping the vilified flower portion of the plant separate from hemp... the stalk and stems of the plant itself...

A few of the Marijuana documentaries explain it much better (and clearer) than I can...

This is all from a segment out of the 3rd Cannabible.

Cannabis is a greek word, of African descent. It means canna- canine - "Dog" and bis - "two". So it is the "Two Dog" plant.

In Mali, West Africa, there is a pot loving tribe called the Dogons. The Dogons were visited by Herodotus, a Greek traveller and chornicler, around 300 BCE. Herodotus came upon the tribe during their yearlong celebration of cannabis that occured every 50 years.

Explaining their celebration, the Dogons point to the brightest star, Sirius, and said it was the "two dog star" and home of the "two dog plant" cannabis. Cannabis, they say, was brought to our planet by the goddess from the Sirius.

Now it gets interesting because the Dogons had specific knowledge about the Sirian system for thousands of years before scientists could prove them right.

The Dogons knew that Sirius B was a white dwarf star, and that it was the heaviest of the group. They were able to describe its elliptical orbit with Sirius A, its 50 year orbital period, and the fact that the star rotates on its own axis. Sirius B is invisible to the naked eye and so difficult to observe that no known photographs were taken of it until 1970.

The Dogons also described a third star Sirius C, which was only discovered in 1995.

So how did the Dogons know about the 50 year orbital period? They say it was brought to them by Nommo, an amphibious being sent to Earth from Sirius for the benefit of mankind.

Could this explain the diversity in the cannabis gene pool? There are cannabis flavors that mimic almost every fruit on the planet, and reminiscent of numerous herbs, and then there are flavors that are seemingly out of this world...

What if these strains and flavors are really from outer space? What if cannabis is a plant highly regarded and traded not just on our planet, but throughout the universe?
