I have had ferrets a lot.
Some things to keep in mind.
First off, if you can, do not buy one at your local pet shop if avoidable, its always nice to rescue one out of one of those hell holes, but if you do your research, youll find out its better to buy them from breeders.
They are very social, if you work or go to school, you might want to think about getting two. Reason for this is they sleep A LOT, but this equates to A LOT of action once they are awake.
Please, oh please do not go cheap on their cage. Do not stick them in a fish tank (not to say you would but ive seen it done and its really sad). They need a ferret cage with ramps, holes, and for an extra dollar or two you can get the black drainage tubing people but in their yards through the doors in the cage so they have something to crawl through, they love it. They need to be taken out of their cages A LOT, otherwise they bite at it and can break their teeth. Anytime you take them outdoors, make sure they are leashed to you, they will run down a drainage hole very quickly.
They also need things to play with in the cage and hammocks to lay in, especially in hot weather.
In the wild, a family of ferrets will all crap in the same corner, They love to crap in corners, so its best to buy litter boxes built for corners (90 degree angles) and put them in every corner of a room they will be in, they will pick their favorite corners once you potty train them, and keep litter boxes in those corners at all times. They have very quick bladders and cant hold it as long as a dog.
Depending how devoted you are, a ferret can learn 10 more commands than a dog, so you can train them to do all kinds of things. One of my ferrets (named Anony, hence my username) I trained to find bags of weed. Friends would come over to sit on the couch and he would look at me like "can I?" and i would whistle and he would start searching for bags of weed. He used to take mine and hide them in my shoes. He would pick them out of peoples pockets/purses and my friends and I would get a good laugh. But you must be careful with this, THEY LOVE to steal and hide things. Especially your keys. They learn that when you pick up your keys, your proly going to leave and make them sad, so they will hide them in one spot, come out and see what your doing, and if your looking for something, they will move it to the next location. They do this in the wild to hide food.
Also, I would recommend an organic food regiment, "ferrets for dummies" carries TONS of info I could go on and on as i have read many a books and had them for many years, so I wont waste your time, its just like growing, make sure you do your research first, they are much more complicated than dogs, but much more rewarding imo.
The more attention you give them, the better, youll have to be VERY patient with potty training, nipping, and bathing.
Youll always hear "ugh ferrets smell" but what I did was change the litter box in their cage daily, sometimes twice a day, and put white towels in their cage (so they could be lightly lighty lightly bleached during the wash with soap) and change these daily and they wont smell one bit.
There are sprays you can give their coats which they also love, and a vitamin that comes in a liquid form (cant remember the name right now) that they will take your finger accidentally for. Same with strawberries. You can use the vitamin liquid to train them.
All I can think of for now, if you have any questions, feel free to PM me.
