friend in trouble, xanax and alcohol

I think a good friend of mine is suicidal right now.

He got a prescription for Xanax and has been taking them to try and calm himself down, but he's been acting very strange lately. Apologizing to people he hasn't spoken to in months, trying to fix all his damaged friendships and relationships, making no attempt whatsoever to meet or socialize with new people.. He's also started neglecting his bills and job, and last time I saw him all he would say is "i need help, man"

I got him to stay at my place with me so I can make sure he's alright and take care of him til he gets through what he's going through. I need to know what a safe dose of Xanax is so I can make sure he doesn't try to OD while he's here. I've seen him take 3 of his .5mg tabs at a time and been very sedated looking. Is that much dangerous? He's also started drinking and taking his Xanax and I have a feeling he's hoping he "accidentally" overdoses.

He refuses to check in to a hospital to get proper care and it's like he's given up on almost everything.

Is there a certain amount of Xanax that can be lethal? Is he in any danger from taking 3 tabs at a time? Also, can alcohol and Xanax be a lethal combination? I've heard it can be and I really don't want my friend dying.

3 .5mgs isnt much at all. Make sure the MG dosage stays under 10mg. People take much more then 10mg of xanax and chill, but they have a tolerance. I know dumbasses that have taken 25-30mg of xanax and been fine, but thats another story...

I usually take like 4mg to feel how I want, I have no tolerance to xanax.

If he's taking those thin long white bars then hes taking 5mg's not .5mgs. 3 is about as much as you can take without losing control but it's still quite a large dose. Normally you are only supposed to take 1. And yes, there is a lethal dose, 2 friends of mine OD'd when they took 9 (45mg) of bars.

Just keep an eye out for repiratory problems, thats what will begin happening if he OD's. I would seriously convince him to see a therapist. It's not healthy to be taking those everyday, especially at that dosage.

Its pretty hard to OD straight on benzos, you need to take a WHOLE LOT

but when you start mixing it with other CNS depressents like alcohol and opiates.... it can get dangerous....

just make sure he isnt mixing other shit with it....

I wouldn't be worried except for the fact that he keeps taking more and drinking more and is trying to "fix" everything in his life but is totally ignoring all bills and his job.. Classic signs of someone about to commit suicide.

I've tried getting him to see a therapist but he refuses. That's why he's staying at my place, so I can at least keep an eye on him and make sure he stays alive.

Don't know much about safe dosage amounts, so I can't help you there, but... Maybe I'm just your average super emotional female, but I think it's great that you're trying to help your friend through this. What a selfless act.

Negatory, I'm about 99.8% sure Xanax does not come in anything higher than a 2mg dosage per pill, which is what the long white bars are.

It's true that the amount he'd have to take to overdose is pretty high, though the alcohol does lower it.

The thing I'd be more concerned about considering the situation would be the potential for addiction. If he's taking more than his prescribed amount on a regular basis, seems likely he'll run out of his script before it's time to get more, and withdrawal could be a bitch and a half.

they been around for a bit, just extremely rare cause not a lot of people have that high of a tolerance. i've only seen a few in my life actually.
personally, for recreational use, id rather have a 2mg bar over the 3mg XR pills.
