Official Computer Problems Thread

Alright, well after receiving a PM from GreenLantern420 regarding the thread I made in General Feedback he suggested a stickied thread in general for people to discuss their computer problems.

So here it is, if you have and pc problems problems feel free to post, myself and others will do our best to assist you. Also, it would be a good idea to go back and edit your post with "Problem solved" or just make another post updating us on the status of your problem so we're not trying to fix old problems that have already been resolved! Thanks.

Good idea for a thread. May I be the first to have a problem.

Now im not sure if this has anything to do with my computer or WoW. But about every 10 minutes, the game will just shut down as well as my computer. Now this is very annoying trying to play WoW in 10 minutes intervals, sometimes its even less.

I've re-installed the game and took all of the add ons, off, but it dowsnt seem to be making a difference.

Thanks in advanced.

eric

Edit:fixed the problem, I had to install a new graphics driver

fuck it, i got something too.. i'm good as fuck with software and programming but hardware programs are not something i do well.

On my older computer, occasionally part of my screen will flicker and distort. i tried to take a screen shot when it happened but it doesn't show it i don't think.

i plugged in my new 19'' LCD monitor and the same thing happens, is this a bad graphics card? i don't know the signs of a graphics card dying.

edit: and no one tell me i shouldn't run as root, i used the sudo command to become the superuser

hmmm it's been awhile since i've ran dos, but it should give you an error readout if something happens. Try opening a command prompt in windows and changing directory to your WoW executable (cd\C:\programfiles\whereverWoWis) and run it in that terminal, maybe next time it craps out it will exit out and you can read the DOS error message and post it back here... that might give us a bit more guidance.

also, try completely exiting the windows manager so you're down to runlevel 3 (terminal interface only, you should see a command prompt) and try running the WoW executable from there.

again, sorry if i insult your intelligence with the whole command line thing, i'm just assuming you're not familiar with it

damn, and now i don't remember DOS syntax that well, but i know it's based on unix syntax. something is not right with that syntax that i gave you and windows in rejecting it. try:

"cd\programfiles\worldofwarcraft"
"cd \programfiles\worldofwarcraft"
"chdir \programfiles\worldofwarcraft" (DOS has 2 directory change commands)

if you're able to get to the directory where your WoW executable is, type in "dir" and it will give you a list of all the files in that directory, look for the executable (something like WoW.exe) and type it onto the command line exactly like that with the ".exe" extension

or try this, go to my computer and locate the directory that way, right click on the WoW executable icon and see if it gives you an option to run the program in ms-dos

You must be using the Internet over a wireless connection.

Do you have a filter on the phone your using? I was having this problem everytime my phone would ring when I realised I didn't have a filter on one of my phones.

Edit:fixed the problem, I had to install a new graphics driver
Even though your problem is fixed I thought I would add my two cents. I was having problems logging into WoW. Every time I logged in, everyone was "Unknown" and naked. I installed new graphics drivers and realised my motherboard had somehow gotten the SLI option turned off, and windows was trying to run SLI with one card. After turning SLI back on everything worked great.

Hmmm if ur trying to solve hardware problems take EVERYTHING out. Anything not needed to run the computer.

reset ur memory in the holder, take out pci cards, take out graphics card, and addons. Then add them back in one by one till you find out what is wrong.

Otherwise I am not sure.

EDIT: Hmm is the Nmap I see open someone is up so something
