Anybody Want a Kitten?

gabby.jpg

Psych! I'm pretty sure this little thing isn't going anywhere anytime soon. :-)

My kids and I were leaving a park yesterday. We were in the middle of nowhere. Woods, dirt road. It was cold. Maybe 50 degrees. Late afternoon. Heavy clouds. Rain in the air. So we're starting to drive out of this place, and we pass an old picnic table in a makeshift turnout. I happened to be driving slowly, and I happened to glance under the picnic table and notice a creature.

At first I thought it was a red squirrel. They're not so common around here. I stopped and told the kids to look. But it had a little face that didn't look much like a squirrel face.

I got out and walked over, wincing at the thought of what I might find. It was a calico kitten. Cute as hell. Sort of sprinkled with leaves. I knelt down tentatively, half expecting a rabid hiss. She mewed and hopped toward me. She seemed strong. I picked her up and brushed her off and gave her a quick once-over. She clung to me and shivered uncontrollably. By this time the kids had rolled the window down and were hanging half-out, watching intently.

So an hour later and the kitten was on the kitchen floor lapping milk from a platter while my ex-sister-in-law was on the phone telling me not to feed it milk, because that'll give it diarrhea. And anyway, the kids took it with them back to their mom's last night, and mom couldn't resist, and at that point my daughter had already named it Gabrielle. My ex and I had hatched a conspiracy to find the kitten a good home in either her neighborhood or mine, but it's apparent the animal has already made its choice.

:-)

I'm in the same boat as you. I found a kitten that must have been no older than a month living by itself near some trash cans at a local marina, and we instantly adopted it. It's now living with a friend, but I have a great bond with it.

Props for saving an animals life. The world needs more sympathetic people like us.

I was never a big fan of cats. I grew up with dogs. Outdoor cats were usually stray and treated almost like vermin where I grew up.

But I married a cat person. We never had a cat while we were married, because our son is allergic to cats. Nevertheless, I spent more time around cats, and I learned that some of them have really cool personalities. They can be loyal, protective, and affectionate. Like dogs. Some of them can be real assholes though. But then, I've met some dogs....

So anyway, our son's been a year or so off the allergy shots, and our daughter's 6, and her taking care of a kitten is a picture worth enduring absolutely any forthcoming nasty litterboxes or doorstoop "presents."

you should get the kitty high. they hate it at first, but they grow to love it. my cat chewbacca (i call him chewbag) comes running at the first scent of weed. then he'll sit in front of me meowing until i give him some.
