Growing magic mushrooms is a lot less risky than growing pot. You do not need any expensive equipment, not much (if any) electricity and there is no suspicious smell. Also, unlike Cannabis seeds, mushroom spores are legal to buy (except in 3 states).

Shrooms are VERY overpriced on the street IMO. I've read reports of people growing 5-10 POUNDS of shrooms every month.

It is outdated and way better techniques exist right now, but that's the basic idea. As you can see it's a lot less risky than growing pot. The pressure cooker can be substituted for other things in some cases.

www.shroomery.org has extensive information about mushroom cultivation. Read the 'teks' (guides) and check out the forums.

This will teach you a lot about mycology, and if you don't want to do anything illegal, you can just do what I do and grow edible mushrooms instead. It's the same process (for some species), all you gotta do is start using spores for psilocybin mushrooms ('shrooms) instead of shiitake or w/e edibles you're growing, if you ever decide to start growing 'shrooms.

If you plan on synthesizing LSD in the future, you will have to learn this stuff anyway because you will be using very similar techniques to grow lots of ergot culture (contains major precursor for LSD).

All in all it is a great learning experience, and being that the topic of 'shrooms or mycology is barely mentioned on these forums, I thought I'd spread the information around. I am fascinated just by reading what these guys are doing (and seeing the crazy pics!) on The Shroomery. Enjoy!

thanks so much for this thread....FINALLY a movie that shows how to grow booms.... i tried growing the pesa strain and it all contaminated....i wasnt able to attain a pressure cooker since the medium i was using was vermiculite and the brown rice flower and all that stuff so i used a steam cooker lol (i used the PFtech guide....actually i think its the one u gave a link for)....

Warning: ONLY order spores from a Shroomery vendor! spores101 is one of them, SporeWorks is another, Ralphsters is another and is the best, but it is in Canada so your shit will go through customs. It's almost never a problem and Ralph hooks you up with lots of shit, so it's worth it. Go to Shroomery.org and go to sponsors or vendors and order from them. You won't get ripped off if you do! and you can communicate directly with representatives from each vendor on the forum.

If you follow the teks to a T without substituting, it is pretty hard to fail. A pressure cooker isn't a must if you're using PF Tek. DO NOT order any "pre-sterilized jars" off Ebay. Make your own jars.

Some fast colonizing strains are South American (SA), Brazilian and Cambodian. If you're just starting out, B+ is a good strain, as is Ecuadorian (EQ) but EQ colonizes very slow (but it makes up for it by fruiting fast). It doesn't really matter. Any Cubensis strain is good though.

Here is a run down of how it's done.


PF Tek style:
Fill jar with brown rice flour (grind up brown rice), water and vermiculite (any gardening store).

Sterilize the jar and then inject it with spores.

Wait until it turns all white (becomes fully colonized) and then take the "cake" out of the jar and put it somewhere humid (100% humidity) and it will fruit.

That's a VERY basic idea. There are lots of things you can do in between to increase yield/potency/etc.


Casing grain:
Get jars, fill them up half-way with "Wild Bird Seed" (bird food from any pet store) that you soaked for 24 hours in water beforehand.

Sterilize the jars in a pressure cooker and then inject them with spores.

Wait till it's fully colonized (all the grain turns white) and then get a tray, mix the grain w/ horse shit on it (or with coco coir, or cow shit with straw) and when everything in the tray turns white, cover that with a layer of peat moss and vermiculite (again, both at any gardening store) and you will get a tray full of shrooms in about 1-2 weeks.

If you use rye berries (available at health food stores) instead of WBS (wild bird seed), you don't need horse shit. You can just drop the colonized rye onto a tray and put peat moss and vermiculite (or just vermiculite, or nothing at all) over it.

That's the basic idea. There's a few other steps involved but nothing is too complex.

For example, you have to spray Oust or Lysol where ever you do work so nothing gets contaminated.

You have to have holes in the lids of the jars so you can inject them.

You need to keep the temperatures constant etc.

i need some help.... my last trip (which was my second trip, my first trip i fell asleep because i couldnt tell the difference between sleep and awake and was like 'whats sleep' and soon fell asleep and missed the whole thing) i had a BAD trip. I herd that the second trip is the most strong because ur system is use to the poison.... and since i didnt get to expierience my first trip.... maybe i expierienced it all at once and it really was disturbing. it was disturbing in a new mental like way..... i really just didnt like it, i accepted death and wanted it to come because the trip was just so hard on me. Every question i have ever had, made sence...but they came at me one second after another so my mind was racing and i couldnt even think i just HATED IT....being left alone with my own self..my own thoughts....man it just sucked life made sence somehow....i thought that we just WERENT suppose to know what the point of life was so i was yelling "OKAY I just want reality back GIVE ME FUCKING LIFE BACK, i dont want to know the truth, just LET ME BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" it was probably the most torturous thing i have ever had...... It really out of all honesty, WAS traumatic...i can only remember 15% of the trip..... the things were unexplanable...i didnt have any scary visions...i dont think...it was just all mental...thinking....it really was not nice at all...i was out int hte woods about to sleep there in just my shirt i WOULD have froze to death and not be here now.... i thought i was insane, permanently... i wanted to be sane again. and now i honestly do know the feeling of insanity...i was reduced to having the deffence of a vegetable...i basicly jsut didnt want any conflict...i wanted peace...i wanted to bbe safe...and warm.. and thought iw as going to die and freez.....man thats only the part that i can remember it really has fucked me up.... it changed my life , and for once i can actually say something changed my life and MEAN IT. i want to trip again....but i fear this ..this.. i dunno its just a new set of feelings i expierienced..i really do not like it at all.... i only had an 8th to....so next tiem IF i do trip it will only be half an 8th. the mushy's were potent to, small little buggers. at one point i remember for a split second expieriencing my salvia trip which was 10 times worse because i actually was seeing behind reality.....as if everything around me ... physical things u see.... matter.... was just a mask, and there was really something behind all of it....i was the focus of life, and everyone was just observing me i hated it it was like i had no real me, there was no real life because i didnt know life....i was being controled it was just very unearthly.....

Ralphsters is great. SporeWorks, Spores101, SporeSource, etc. Anything listed on the first link above is a reputable vendor.

Spore print = dried spores on a piece of paper or foil. The cap of the mushroom is pressed down on a piece of paper and the gills drop spores onto the paper. To use this, you either scrape spores off it using a scapal or sterilized knife into the jar, or you hydrate it with water, suck it up into a syringe and inject the jars.

Spore syringe = Hydrated spores that you just inject into a jar. If this is your first grow I highly suggest using a syringe because you're more likely to contaminate a jar by scraping spores into a jar (because to do that you have to open the jar, and opening the jar = introducing contamination)

It depends on A LOT of factors. It will not take more than two months unless you seriously screw up. Also, there are a lot of ways to speed up the process.

Let's say you start off using spores (which most everyone will). You inject the spores into the jar. After 2-4 days the spores germinate and then after about 5-7 days you will see a tiny white spot. If you've made it this far, fucking fantastic.

Now the white spot (called mycelium) will keep getting bigger and eventually cover the whole jar. If you choose a slow ass colonizer like Ecuador, this can take 2-4 weeks. If you choose South American, this will probably be a little less than 2 weeks. (I'm not really sure on times because I grow edibles. Read the Shroomery forums for more info. Better yet, sign up and search their forums.)

So fast forward 3 weeks, you have a fully white (colonized) jar. You now have to birth the jar. Take the "cake" out and put it in a jug of water for 24 hours in the fridge (this is called dunking).

Take it out and roll it in vermiculite (these two steps are known as 'dunking & rolling') and then mist it with water.

Put these cakes in a terrarium, increase humidity to 100% and start giving them light (before this part, the jars should of been somewhere dark @ 80-82F. If the temp was higher then contamination was more likely to occur, and if the temp was lower they take longer to colonize but it's worth it because you're less likely to get a contamination.)

After 1-2 weeks you will start to see little pinheads on the cake. These are called pins and will eventually be the actual mushroom fruitbodies. Pins = good. You want lots and lots of pins!

Some pins will stop growing shortly after being introduced. These are called aborts. You should take these off because they will not grow. As you get better you get less aborts but they are normal. You can eat them and they are potent, so it's alright.

One day you'll wake up and see that you have a lot of pins about 1-2" tall. After this you can literally see the mushrooms growing by the hour. Doubling in size every 6-12 hours. If you look at the video in this post, you'll see that near the end they start growing very fast.

The above is called PF Tek (http://www.erowid.org/plants/mushroo...s_law10.shtml). It is very very outdated. I only mention it because the other methods turn people off. BUT I highly recommend reading about casing and grain before attempting PF Tek.

Casing isn't that hard and it's VERY worth it! You can even case your PF tek cakes so don't sweat it. If this is all overwhelming, don't worry. Just read PF tek first and understand it.

All in all it will probably take 1.5 - 2 months when you're starting out. As you gain experience, you can do a lot of things to decrease wait time and increase yield. For example:

When using grain like rye or wild bird seed, you can shake the jar and this causes the jar to colonize faster.

If you use liquid culture (LC) rather than spores (you have to make LC yourself), you will shave a few days off the colonization time because the spores don't need to germinate. LC + grain = about 10 days to colonize.

Casing to something mushrooms thrive in like horse manure and straw really increases colonization time. It will take about 1-2 week for the fully colonized grain jar to colonize a tray of manure.

Then about a few days to a week to see pins. Not only that but you'll see 2-3x more pins if you use casings instead of cakes. They will be more potent and bigger too.

Later on you can move on to more advanced shit like cloning your best mushroom so you'll have a better, even pinset, creating hybrids by crossing two strains, etc etc.

It all sounds hard but most of it is just learning all the new terminology. You're basically just soaking, simmering, pressure cooking, mixing, injecting..

One thing that fucks up people who are starting out is contamination. You must absolutely be clean AT LEAST until the jar is fully colonized.

For example while injecting the spores, you should have clean clothes on,

a painters mask or just DO NOT breath near/on the jar (bacteria),

washed hands with gloves on,

light the tip of the needle until it gets red hot and then cool it with an alcohol swab and swab the jar lid also,

spray Oust or Lysol liberally in the room and let it do its thing,

spray your body,

bleach ALL working surfaces,

incubate (just means keep somewhere dark and at 80-82F) the jars somewhere clean. Tupperware cleaned out with bleach.

If you follow all that and still get a contamination, it means your jar lids weren't filtered good enough, OR you fucked up sterilizing the jars. Rye or WBS for example MUST be pressure cooked. No boiling / steaming / microwaving will sterlize it.

I've read all this many times but what I've never read about is what I'm most curious about commercially. Yields.

What can I expect for yields per cake? Do I need a full spore syringe for each cake? New spore syringes for each grow as well? If I wanted to harvest 3-5 pounds per grow, what would I have to look into area/material wise? Lights?
