How Do You Maintain Yourself?

This question goes out to all the people who live by themselves, how do you do it? Where do you work and how much, and yet are able to attend school? How do you support your weed habit, food, rent, car insurance, etc.??

Im thinking about moving out of my house because my house is terribly small and I feel as if I have no privacy, and that Im taking privacy away from my parents as well. I'd like to know how you fellas live on your own

I'm curious about this myself, I'm about to move to singapore in three months but the house I'm staying at is a friend's second house so rent isnt a big deal but I think I'm going to have to become a hound dog and sniff out the pot cause I hear (according to webehigh.com) you can get the death penalty for 500 grams or more of the good ol' mary. So I imagine that it will be hard to find. But my friend has already set us up with jobs at a local LAN center. But my concern is after we decide to move back here to the us, cali to be exact.

You just... work. It's not hard, you just have to bite down hard and get things done. Gotta make sure you do all the things you NEED to do before you do anything else, gotta be responsible. Simple as that.

Well when I first was living on my own I needed two jobs to get by. I worked at Dunkin Donuts making $8.50/hr plus tips 30hrs a week, and I also worked as a temp. at a sheet metal shop making $10.50 40hrs a week.

Since then I am still on my own but things have worked out at the sheetmetal shop and I am a manufacturing engineer tech. making $18.00/hr (it's salery though so I do not get overtime). The good thing about this job is they pay for me to go to school- so I do not have to worry about that.

Obviously I'm not working at Dunkin Donuts any more

Living on your own is tough- if you can save up as much money as you can before you do it, it will help.

Saving up money before you move out is probably the best thing you can do... everything is going to be more expensive than you think.

I just moved to New York with my boyfriend to go to law school, and we had to save up a year's rent before we came up here. He just started a $10/hour job and I go to school full-time, and we're basically paying for everything with leftover student loan money. My boyfriend tried to quit smoking (cigs) since they cost about 3 times more here, but now he buys pouch tobacco and sits around rolling them all the time. You just have to try to save money where you can.

It takes a while to get used to, and there's usually some price shock (there are a LOT of saved expenses living with your parents) but after a while you get used to it. And if you have parents or a good support system, there's not much to worry about--my family has no money, but I know my mom would scrape some up if I really needed it, so I don't have to worry about ending up homeless or anything.

Good luck!

Growing Herb is a good way to kill 2 birds with one stone(no pun int) but you can make some extra cash and you wont have to buy herbs.

as of now i still live at home, and although that sucks, it's a personal choice as of now.

as much as i'd love to leave, i'd rather concentrate on school(16credit hours) and work part time to have some cash in my pocket than working full time and going to school full time. i would be a zombie, and would never have any free time, it's just not worth it. at least now.

next year i will finally be transferring out of community college, (this is my sophomore year in college) and heading to a university. not sure if i'm dorming or getting my own place.

i think, while i can, i'll take a guaranteed living space, so i might end up dorming.

Best thing to do is find a decent job where you can make at least 12/hr. I think it would be pretty much impossible to live by yourself and live off anything less than that. Then just start saving, like say 6 months rent or w/e. More the better, that way if you run into money issues, at least you have something there. I'm pretty good at saving money, if you really want something, you'll work for it. I dont really live on my own per say, but i live in a drom for 9 months out of the year. My food is paid for but not having a job sucks. It's okay though, i just use what i've made over the summer. GL mang.

Yeah i think its of urgency that I get the fuck out of here. I live in a one room apartment, and my parents did this sort of division thing, so i dont have a room, just some damn curtains. Ive talked to my mom about us getting a house and i'd be able to throw down anywhere for 300-400 a month for morgage. I just dont know what to do, At my age I can't be living in a little corner like this. I also just entered community college to start off, and Im thinking about dropping out until I can afford my own shit and start working a fulltime or something. Im going to go crazy if I stay here. I love my parents because of wat they have done for me and all, but i wish we woulda just stayed in Colombia. My moms was a bank accountant and my dad was a cab driver, but they decided to come here to live the American dream. We have come to realize that the American dream is wanting to leave this country.
