Weed being called 'pathetic' for recreation

I just got in another msn arguement with some ignorant fuck. What I'm getting so tierd of is this;

"Dude I just think it's sad that the only way you have fun is when you're high."

Or

"It's pathetic that you can't have fun without weed."

Or

"Arent there better things you could do with your time that sit around and be high?"

I say fuck that. First of all, I had plenty of fun before I started smoking weed. Just as much if not more than anyone who didn't. So when I started smoking, it only made those fun things even better. And as a bonus, it took some of the not-as-cool parts of my life and helped make them better, or make me feel better about them or be able to deal with them better. But yet people say that's sad or some shit? I know they mainly mean people who's lives were shit before they started smoking, so they started smoking to kind of help deal with it. But even that is bullshit.

The way I look at it is, why can't weed be like anything else you do for recreation? Should I say it's sad that people have to skateboard to have fun? Or play video games? What's the difference? Weed is something you enjoy that's best when you don't do too much of it. Hell, it does have some risks, but so does skateboarding. If you enjoy skateboarding, acknlowedge the risks, and have fun doing it, why is that not pathetic, if smoking weed is?

I know kids who wouldn't have a damn thing going for them, failing school, etc. if it wasn't for riding a skateboard or doing something they loved like that. They'd be the first to say the only thing they had fun doing was skateboarding. But if you switch skateboarding to weed, it becomes pathetic? And I also know even more kids who have great lives but skateboarding is still the funnest and best thing to them in their lives... why can't weed be? Wether you have a great life or not and whatever your purposes for smoking are, if you enjoy doing it, why does that have to be any different, and even more important, why is it anyone else business?

Weed is my favourite part of life. I love nothing more than getting high and playing hack with a few friends or playing guitar. And people bitch that it's sad that I need weed to have fun... well apparently all they need for fun is to judge other peoples lives and what they do to live when it doesn't stand up to their so called standard. I guess they may never understand that we can all have fun sober... but a fun sober time is twice as good when you make it a fun high time.

Don't you guys agree?

(BTW; I'm not picking on skateboarding or nothing, it's just something that comes to my mind for what I was trying to say)

Whilst I agree wholeheartedly that one can indeed have oodles of fun high, I do agree with the above two sentiments; if you can't have fun without weed, that is pretty sad.

Oh yeah, it is sad, but more in the 'feel bad for you' kind of sad. I don't see why someone who's having a rough life and can't really have any other fun than getting high should be called pathetic for using weed to try and make their life a bit happier... if just seems more sensible then sitting in your own miserableness, ya know?

I'm going to disagree with you, here.

As a MH pro, I can tell you that anyone who smokes to alleviate misery is going to do themselves no favours in the long term, as dope and mental problems seldom mix well. Not just that, but the best thing one can do for oneself in a depresion situation, is try and do something, no matter how much you think you can't be bothered. Nine times out of ten, once you are out there, engaging in some activity, being with people etc you will feel better for it. Trust me on this; I've been through it myself, and have treated many others for similar things, so I do understand 100%, but many years of trial and error have shown me that hiding yourself away is the worst thing to do..

I do not agree that a 'rough life' is an excuse to do nothing except smoke; that is very defeatist, and will never yield positive results. Many of us have had what one might consider a rough time, myself included, but this is life, and you have two options; fall by the wayside, or get on with it. Getting on with it takes more effort, but is way more rewarding, and definitely more healthy in the long run. It stands to reaon tat if one isolates oneself, with a problem like that, all one will do is think, analyse, persecute....and generally exacerbate all the existing 'bad thoughts'.

Just as a footnote, the only effective way to treat depressive illness is with a combination of meds and cognitive therapy.

I didn't really mean depression or mental illness... best example I could think of is my cousin. He had an alcoholic mother, and an abusive father. They were poor and lived in a shitty neighborhood. He was still sharp as a tack and didn't have a single mental problem that he or any of his family knew about. All I know is he didn't do well in school and every time I talked to him, he'd just be either quiet or only talk (when asked) about the things that werent going right in his life. Adventually he started to just cheer up a lot, even got better grades in school, etc. He's going to the University of Michigan now (which takes at least a 3.7 GPA I think?), and I just asked him a few years ago what changed (because I knew nothing with his home life situation had changed). He said he started smoking pot... told me it was the only thing he really ever legitimately had fun doing. It kind of gave him the ambition to do things to make his life better for himself. He got a job so he could buy weed when he wanted to instead of just when a friend had it or something, he started smoking when doing his homework so he could concentrate better and that's when his grades shot right up.

The same thing happened to me but in a different situation kind of. I wasn't ever really depressed and I don't have any mental problems, but I knew I wasn't enjoying my life, at all. I started smoking, my grades got better, hell I even went to school more often because I got more sleep, etc.

I see where it isn't going to help at all if you're in need of other treatment... but I hope ya get what I'm saying. I never really meant, either, that having a rough life would be an excuse to do NOTHING but smoke weed, but from personal experience, when I was having rough times and I got high, it made a lot of new things fun that I really never enjoyed before. Like that's when I started listening to a lot of music, picked up a guitar, started riding bmx again, etc.

damn right floydian!!! everyone has their passion. for some its fine wine or cigars or food or art or... you get the picture. for me and i assume most of you here my passion is ganja. i choose to do this b/c i like it. i research it and read books and mags about it. non stoners and SxE ppl just dont have a clue what our beloved plant means to us. i dont feel sorry for or think someone is pathetic just cus they skate or go to art galleries. do what you want just let me rock it. fuck man. oh and for those high on life ppl, i usta get high on life all the time b4 i smoked weed but i built up a tollerance to that shit quick!!! peace

Lol jk. Thanks man... I've always felt passionately on this subject, and it really just confuses me as to how anyone can be so hypocritically blinded to think they see a difference between smoking herb for fun and anything else you do for fun.
