Hey guys, been a while since i've made a thread, especially on this sub forum. But I was browsing tumblr and saw some horrible misinformation about dreadlocks, and I thought the best place to rant about it is Grasscity, since this site i'm sure has its fair share of dreadlocks. The post I saw was this: Cultural Appropriation: Dreadlocks ^ That is just the introduction, the rest is follow up bullshit, but it doesnt matter because their point is entirely false. Dreadlocks did not 'originate' anywhere. THEY FORM NATURALLY. And have been proven to be a part of various cultures, including even the ancient egyptians. Many accounts of mummified bodies with dreadlocks and even dreaded wigs have been discovered. Some other cultures include: africans, hindus, vikings, romans, and hell pretty much ANY culture that didnt feel the need or chose not to comb their hair. Because that's pretty much all that dreadlocks are. Knotty hair. The Fact that this article tries to give religious implications is ridiculous. Sure INSIDE of Rastafarianism they may represent religion, but sorry, Rastas did not create dreads. The article suggests that people who wear them outside of Rastas are bigots or ignorant. Thats pretty laughable considering all the bullshit this guy is spouting. If anything Rastas were late to the party on dreadlocks. For the record I DO indeed have dreadlocks, they are completely natural and i used no wax/oil/or any other tricks. The first few had some backcombing involved and the rest formed on their own over time. Luckily I work in a porn store. My boss has never once said anything about them, but my whole head isnt dreaded, only the back.
