Mix in a bit of sand to make it drain better.
What is sold as ´potting soil´ is usually nearly all peat. Organic top soil is going to have more nutrients. I get best results fom a nutritous, well draining mix. I add horse shit, sand, volcanic rock and garden compost to a peat based substrate. And use a comfrey based liquid fert. We all have to make best use of what we can get.
