Plants need air too, and they get it through their roots. Thats why hydro setups always have air on the roots through bubbles or exposure or whatever. So what I plan to do is plant in a nice dryish spot that is just about two feet above the water level (near a swamp). You want to give the plants roots enough air (perlite is good for air, so is slightly loose soil so mix it up before you plant). If the damn roots are submerged totaly your plant will drown so you want it to go searching for the water, make shure the majority of the roots stay "dry" so they get some oxygen.. but dont let the roots dry out at the same time.
