clearing trees

I had an idea about how to get a nice clear space without cutting trees down. I am not sure if this will work for people that live in evergreen forests but for those living in places like me where it is all maples and broad leaf trees it can work.

1. Get a 1/2" drill bit that will go more than halfway through the tree in question, cordless drills are gonna be key here

2. Drill a hole towards the center of the tree making it at least halfway through and at a slight down angle. Not too steep of an angle as you lose distance in and you want to make it to the core of the tree.

3. Take a container of salt and fill that hole about halfway up with it. Next pour a little water in and repeat this process a couple times over the next week. This should kill your tree without dropping it to the ground and as long as you do it before the winter is over or in early spring it will not get any leafs on it so you will get plenty of sunlight to your babies.

This trick will let you create open areas where you get enough sunlight without having to cut down trees and make it easy to spot. This will obviously not help if you are trying to clear a large area or if it is a really dense forest. But in small clearings this is a great way to get an extra couple hours of sun on your plants. I know it is kinda not cool to be killing trees in order to get your plants out there but sometimes it is needed.

Re: clearing trees

you can also limit which branches you do in this way, just use smaller amounts on a particular branch. Dont kill the whol tree, it offers cover.
