It should absolutely work. I would start the seed in small cups (keg cups) that you can keep hidden close by until the seedlings are established. Once a few sets of leaves develop, plant them out in the woods to fend for themselves. That being said, you should put some effort into preparing the soil where you will plant them. Some compost mixed into the native soil will work wonders. For fertilizer, I'd suggest Osmocote. While this is not made from organic sources, it does contain all the trace minerals the plants will need, AND it will last for three months or so. If you experience drought conditions, you probably will have to sneak out there once a week or so to water, but during a good year, you can leave them to do their own thing. Also, come June or July, check for males and pull them so you don't wind up seeding your crop.
