They make such for wonderful pictures!
*Note: I did not post this thread in the grow journal section due to this isnt what i'd consider a journal, but rather just a small collaboration of information i've gathered from this year's plants.
Growing Conditions:
Started out as spreading seeds in early Spring (NOT winter!)
Spread seeds upon a freshly tilled bed, then packed the soil down by walking over it.
Miracle Grow potting soil was arranged upon the base of the plants. (BE CAREFUL doing this, I had some wood chips mixed in my soil, and wood + poppy = instant browning-off disease. Dont ask me why, but every poppy that came in contact with wood of any sort (sticks, branches on the ground) died the following day.)
They were given a generous amount of 10-30-10 fertilizer (Rose Fertilizer) ONCE; the day before flowering stage began. I then switched to a more modest 15-20-15. I figured if i resumed using 10-30-10 it would eventually burn them all up. I am experiencing 0 fertilizer burn on any plants and they are all very healthy.
Upon flowering stage, the buds swell very large and become too heavy for the stems, I helped them out by staking them, although they probably would have corrected themselves in the long-run. I am continuing to stake these poppies as they bloom.
The surrounding plants are clover. I chose clover because it is easy for me to trim, and keeps other "big" weeds out of the flower bed. Next year I will attempt using some mulch (very cautiously though.)
The plants behind the poppies are Marigolds, developing sunflowers, and a small blackberry bush.
Any comments, questions, or suggestions are welcome.
