Worms Eatin My Sticky Nugs

So things are going well with one exception.....

Little green worms are tunneling through my biggest buds. I have experienced this in the past but not to this level. I noticed the tell tale sign a few weeks ago; a little section of a big cola will be dead and dried up. Upon further inspection I find worm poo and a little green worm usually an inch or two from the dead section. They eat through the small stems off the main stem and then that part of the bud dies.

To make things worse the dead portion of the bud will then mold if not removed from the plant......

I've heard of an enzyme you can put on the plant that when eaten kills the worm but i don't want to sprinkle anything on the herb at this point in the game. So for now its a seek and destroy mission. The little fuckers are glistening with herb oils and have quite the appetite for bud. I have to confess I started eating them after i pick them out. The herb in the veggie garden seems to be have more worms than the plants out in the back forty. My corn had a lot of worms this year but those worms were larger and i think a different species of worm.

Re: Worms Eatin My Sticky Nugs

If they're out of control I'd consider an early harvest. If it is still way too early, find some Bacillus thuringiensis (BT). The garden center at Home Depot has it where I live but you can order online and have it shipped quick.

http://www.mastergardening.com/dee-0096.html

Bt acts by producing proteins (delta-endotoxin, the "toxic crystal") that reacts with the cells of the gut lining of susceptible insects. These Bt proteins paralyze the digestive system, and the infected insect stops feeding within hours. Bt-affected insects generally die from starvation, which can take several days.

Just noticed you're in California...that may be a problem getting BT shipped to you.

Cause squishing them was getting messy and i was getting worm guts all over the buds when i went searching for the next worm. It's really not gross, i just swallow them, i figure a little extra protein is good for you and besides that they are covered (and filled) with ganja.

Your'e probably OK with eating hot dogs which by MY standards is way nastier than an eating a little organic worm....

Re: Worms Eatin My Sticky Nugs

BUD WORMS! Do you live in Northern Cali.? Everyone is getting them. You're right, I've had them the past 2 seasons, but never this bad. Best thing to do, unfortunately, is to check them daily and pick off the worms. I heard BT works good but I don't want them dying in my buds. The good news is, when you hang your buds to dry, they leave. I grow all organic. This year, in the fall (important), we are going to add nematodes to our dirt. The pupae are in the dirt during the winter. The nematodes will kill them off. I hope this works for us.

Re: Worms Eatin My Sticky Nugs

Yeah. This is my first season in the North Bay Area, before that i was in Chico and every year i would have a few worms in the garden but nothing to devastating. I did notice that my ganja in the veggie garden (corn, peppers, tomatoes, etc.) has about 5x the amount of worms than the garden in the back field. Almost every ear of corn i grew this year had worms in it.....

I have heard about using nematodes but have never tried it myself. Do you have a reputable source. I assume they would need to be fresh and handled correctly to insure they do not die. If i remember correctly direct sunlight kills them so they must be applied in the dark.

Nothing like a little worm poo in your bong hit.....

Re: Worms Eatin My Sticky Nugs

a lot of the nurseries are now carrying nematodes. We also plan on getting bug lights (zappers) but I have to research if the light will effect the plants.
