Re: Outdoor Flowering - 12/12 does not apply

Cantharis, I figured plants could only start flowering after ;une 21, but I've seen some pretty experienced growers on here talk about harvesting outdoor grows before that...is it possible to do that in warmer areas regardless of light cycle or would it just be a realllly long veg stage?

It's possible to flower outside of natures window of time. It's neither the smartest, nor the most reliable option, though.

Cantharsis, good thread man. I didn't realize it was the night cycle that mattered. Knowing about the chemical buildup makes me understand why it's critical to NOT interrupt their sleepy-time.

Look up OldSkool1010 in Florida. He starts off in winter indoors under lights, then moves outdoors where the shorter day triggers flowering. But you can only do that in tropical climates.

But if you are just using natural sun, the above scenario applies.

Re: Outdoor Flowering - 12/12 does not apply

So if i wanted to flower a plant otuside, i could slowly ween it from its normal daylight hours to 12/12 or even less light?

Indoor growers give their plant an 18/6 regime (18 hrs daylight, 6 darkness) to induce vegetative growth, then when their plants are large enough they revert to a 12/12 regime to induce flowering. This causes a certain amount of confusion with outdoor growers.
As the days are getting longer, your ladies growing outdoors will be in vegetative growth. Once the solstice (21 June) is past and the days start getting significantly shorter, the girls begin to flower. I find this happens about the middle to end of July.
They DO NOT wait until natural 12/12 arrives before they start to flower - this is merely a convenient lighting ratio used by indoor growers. Natural 12/12 actually occurs at the autumnal equinox, on 21 September (same everywhere in the world) and they will be well into flowering, getting to harvesting, by that time.

thanks alot for this post!
im a noob, and im going to do my first grow outdoors, and i actually WAS wondering that.

its a shame theres no way to induce earlier flowering (SOG), except maybe planting later?

You can make outdoor plants bud, im sticking it in my clauset at 9 pm and taking them out at 9 am, its working the buds are already swelling up. Im hoping im going to have 4 main colas full of bud , but i cant estimate how much these buds are going to grow.

In that case it obviously ISNīT an outdoor grow.

Re: Outdoor Flowering - 12/12 does not apply

Ofcourse it is, they are only growing with sunlight no artificial lighting. So therefore they are outdoor.

Re: Outdoor Flowering - 12/12 does not apply

My plants that are my first grow were started indoors on a 24/0 schedule for the first month and a half. then were moved into a green house in mid april. I live in fairbanks alaska and the days are only getting longer ( sun rises around 5 am sets around 1 am)and they just showed signs of sexual maturity. SO i figured the 12/12 didnt apply to outdoors. thx for proving my asumptions though.

If it is being put into a closet (spelling) then it is obviously being taken indoors, ie being taken into a building so it is NOT an outdoor grow, where it is being grown by natural sunlight.

Re: Outdoor Flowering - 12/12 does not apply

Let me ask this just for peace of mind. I started some plants at the end of January. I let them get some veg time then I switched to 12/12 to sex. Then I switched back to 18/6 and took some cuttings. On April 2nd I put 2 outside and ever since they have crowned and it looks like the buds are getting bigger. I understand that it is flowering right now and I was wondering if I should be using my fox farm tiger bloom to make the buds bigger and if so would I be able to possibly get a harvest or will they revert back to veg? I live between Ohio and Tennessee by the way.

Re: Outdoor Flowering - 12/12 does not apply

mmm, good thread.

Last year, my first grow, it didn't start flowering till end of aug. By mid oct, it was still not done and frost came so I had to harvest. I live in west and a lot of people were saying that it should start around aug. I guess I got saliva seeds, bag seeds.

so this year, I'm going try force flower at end of July by putting black bag over them.

No worries mate ;-) You'll just have a shorter vegetation, but they'll still have time to grow nice and large :-)
