I just use black plastic 5 gal pales and drill four 1" holes at the bottom and then square the lower two angles for better draining, there VERY strong and will last a lifetime too.

Go to a donut shop and ask them to save you a couple. They usually get all their fillings in 5 gallon buckets.

Cost : Free

Not black though, I was answering the OP. You could spray paint them?

For 5gal buckets get the paint buckets you see at home depot and drill holes around the bottom. For a cheaper solution go get some 1$ black 5gal growbags.

Speaking of 5 gallon pails, does anybody have advice on transplanting from a 5 gallon pail? I'm assuming the root ball would be massive - but I might need to later on in the season.

I have heard other methods but 5 gal of root ball with a big plant and wet soil can be a handful,if the roots are semi full(at least to the bottom holding the soil together)i do it when its dry and TX an intact 5 gal. looking root ball into pre soaked soil in the new bigger place then water well with PHed water.

If you dont want as much hight you can cut off the bottom 1/3rd of the root ball and replace that with fresh soil for the new roots which will slow the plants growth.
