Will this work for germination?

Here is a pic of a victorian style lantern cloche. Gardeners use these to protect germinating plants from frost, animals and heavy rainfall. Take a look:

Has anyone ever tried one of these contraptions? They are thick glass and made of cast iron so they are heavy.

That is an attractive addition to your garden, it just seems like a lot o cash for a mini cold-frame to me. 4-6 stakes with some 6 mil clear poly would do the same thing for less than 1/10 the cost...but it won't be pretty.

in that case, you can't help but get your money's worth. I don't know if they open for ventilation or not, but you should be careful about heat building up inside during warm spring days...assuming you're experiencing any warm spring days in your neck of the woods.

a very cheap idea is to just cut the buttom of a milk jug or a 2 lt bottle and place it over the plant with the lid off for vent.

To vent it you do like in this picture. The lid is removable and just sits on top. But I hear ya man, I dont wanna fuck up anything. My seeds were expensive http://www.crocus.co.uk/product/_/classid.201291/

Cant beat free, at the very least you can try it out and see how it does, and as stated just monitor temp/humidity levels closely.
