Talking Where to get good soil and what kind?

I just left and was about to snatch a few bags of top soil across the street at the store but just my luck i see a fucking cop, so i came back and took the neighbors miracle grow soil-feeds for 3 months. Guess i should have asked first but,
Would top soil work as the medium with a little blended in humus my aunt has at her house? The miracle grow is for a different project and its too expensive for how much i need thats why i wanted to know about the top-soil.

~~~ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED~~~
Basically garden soil compacts more than potting soil in a container and the water does not get through to the roots properly. Potting mix is less compact and water penetrates more easily.
You can make your own potting mix by adding sand or compost to normal soil. Both garden soil and potting mix get deprived of nutrients as the plants use them so you need to fertilizers periodically.
I hear promix is great stuff...it's not conditioned with ferts and is mostly peat moss. I will say though that if you are planting directly in the ground and if the surrounding native soil has a high clay content, you will get water sitting in the hole where you filled with promix and it will drown the roots of your plants! Happened to me last year. Live and learn.
hey old pork, i have that exact situation and was wondering how to prevent it. what are you going to do this year to prevent your roots from drowning? i am on a hill, so that might help with the drainage, but i have no idea how to fix the problem of water pooling up.
Are you growing in containers, or in the ground? For containers, I use equal parts generic potting soil, composted cow manure, peat moss and garden soil (mine is sandy loam). You wouldn't do badly with that mix in a hole either.
The compost will provide all the nitrogen the plants will need for several months. During flowering you can add some 10-30-10 or some similar ratio fertilizer.
Foxfarm
I swear you will notice the biggest difference if you use the Foxfarm Ocean forest blend soil. Its like 10 bucks a bag or so, so its expensive. But i think it made my plant double as big as the others. It was the biggest in my crop and since that soil is expensive i only used it for one plant. That plant had the same amount of nutes as the others, and i had two others of the same strain and from the same mother plant. The plant got 9ft 6in tall.
