Small yield

I have read some where that somebody let his plant only start the vegetative state and he just put it the flowering state to see whether it was a male or female, then he pulled the males out and put the females back in vegetative state. Now my question is what would of happend if he left it in the flowering state, I was thinking it would just create a smaller yield, am I correct?
