Exclamation !!!Question!!!

Its it better to let the plant live as long as possible before harvest or does that lower the quality of the bud how manny weeks from flowering would be enough to harvest an unknown strain with optimal results

You keep the plant around as long as it takes the buds' thc to turn half amber, half cloudy, that is the peak THC time in the plants maturity. You could just clip the bud and keep the plant alive to grow more, but it would proably be too late in the season to do that. The time to completely flower for your plant would be hard to guess, so just see with a microscope the color of the THC and you'll know.

this is partially incorrect, THC production peaks right before trics turn amber, the amber color is THC degrading, which gives you a more pronounced sleepy lazy buzz the longer you let it go for. I plan on doin this to a couple of my plants to put aside for those nights when I just cant seem to sleep,

Correct, the answer to when your plant(s) are ready is all in the trichs, use a microscope, prefrably 15 or 20x to look for the colors as already explained. Most growers harvest when its about %80 amber/brown and the rest clear white as to not just get a pure couch lock high.
Me, i like to harvest when the second set of stigmas is out and is still clear for a nice energetic head buzz, cuts back on potencey and yeild but definatly makes up for it with the high.
