growing from year to year(same sites)

Okay so my question is if I leave my plants to die at my site and winter comes and then come back in the spring will there be some new plants growing, if the plants from the year before left seeds. Like is it possible for them to just start to grow natural in areas if they were undisturbed year after year and then possibly even spread. I was also wondering if there is a strain that could possibly be better for this type of thing or could sorta survive better in a colder climate from year to year. If someone could tell me if its just possible at all and maybe elaborate a bit that would be great. Thanks
