Canopy

I have around 20 plants growing tightly together (small grow spot), each between 1 and 2 feet tall, with big healthy leaves on all of them. Thing is, with the number of plants so tightly together, they have created somewhat of a canopy - which I suppose will block out sunlight to the leaves beneath the top ones. I was considering pruning, but decided I would rather have the plants grow upward than outward (because they are so tightly packed to begin with). So I'm not sure what I should do with the canopy situation. I want each plant to produce as many buds as possible, and I don't want the other plants limiting them. I guess that'll teach me not to grow too many in one spot.
Anyway, suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks.

if they are 5 inches away from each other in the same soil you might run into problems ina few weeks with the roots being to close together
