Clay-Like Soil

Hello, and sorry if this is the wrong forum header for this, but I have a few questions regarding soil outdoors (yes this is covered in a guide but not too in-depth and its somewhat hard to find, so please dont be sending me stupid links which i assure you i've read.

A little starter info: I live in Michigan, and am just about to plant my seeds (around june 1st, germination tomorrow). I am guerilla growing way back in the woods where many plants grow and insects are by the hundreds ( especially mosquitos ). Now, when I dig up the grass and plants / weeds growing in the ground, I find a very clay-like soil. I got about 75 pounds of organic Humus / manure soil and mixed it in with the existing clay-like soil, in a 10ft x 4 ft rectangle.

I dont have any way of checking the PH because I am not knowledgeable about that kind of stuff yet as this is my first grow.

Should I still be able to germinate the white root out and plant the seeds and have a successfull grow or is the clay-like soil going to prevent me from getting a crop?

Much help needed, thanks~

I'll move this to Outdoor Growing, where you're more likely to get an answer.

clay is fine to grow in. and if you mixed some of your own in it thats even better. as long as other vegetation is growing in it and is nice and green you dont really have to worry about the ph. you only really need to worry about ph when your growing in a pot.

i would not start germination in the ground tho. those tiny little seedlings will get pummeled by a thunderstorm or a really hot day. if you can, try and start them inside until they are at least 3-5 inches tall. then they can take the rain and heat. this will save some early casualties greatly. hope this helps.

Good luck with clay considering the roots will get no oxygen if you don't mix in some regular soil in with it.

I happen to be in the exact same situation you are in. And I'll tell you that so far, my plants are looking great. Just note that I used potting soil over top of the clay-like native soil. Good luck, fellow Michigander.

If you mean where do I live in Michigan, I can PM you about that... rather not get too specific in a public forum.

I bought a bag of lime to throw on the soil but I never actually used it. I'm not sure what difference it would have made.
