Animal Hair

Its often said various forms of hair will scare animals off, human hair and dog hair, mostly. Ive already lost a couple plants to either deer, squirrels or something else. So, Im going to have to start over, but this time, I am taking no chances an I am upping my defense.

Ive got a shit-ton of dog hair which has been saved up over the years (I knew itd serve some purpose, eventually) and I am going to be placing it in and around my grow.

Rather then just sprinkle it on the ground, I was thinking about making satchels and stashing them under logs, in trees, etc. Does anyone know of a cheap way to do this? Any place I can get some small cloth sacks, perhaps the size of a baggie? Or, could anyone reccomend a material which is inexpensive that I could use to fashion my own satchels?

I hesitate to just spread it around because of wind, rain and various other factors.

Any insightful information, personal experience or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Got any old socks laying around?...i've never done it before but it sounds like a sock could hold that hair, and animals would be able to smell it though the material too.

Yeah, socks would work, never considered that before.

Better yet, I bet nylons would work even better.

Honestly for no reason other then the fact that I thought it might prove to be useful at some point in time. (And no, I have no idea what dog hair could possibly be useful for, other then my current application.)

you know you can knit sweaters and shit with it...people sell those sweaters on ebay for lots of $$$

lmao. hahaha. good thread here. i've been pissin in bottles... and then spreadin my piss all around. as well as fishing line... but the fishing line isnt perfect... it may be a "first" defense against deer and other large mammals, but coyotes and whatnot can get around that. The hair is a brilliant idea... it's not like urine which acts as a territory marker... but the hair may actually get the animals believing there's a dog right there. just pray you dont have cougars. LOL. i think it may strike curiosity in a large cat if it smells a domestic animal nearby. i dunno, good luck and keep us posted.

for my information... what, if anything, have you tried in the past that didnt seem to work?

Well, the only defensive stuff I was using before was some aluminum welding wire, which the woodland creatures could have easily went under or over (and they did, considering 15 plants went bye-bye, hence my renewed efforts).

Since then Ive found a better location and have been prepping it. Instead of a single middle-height wire, Ive began using a lower and a higher wire. Ive also got a bunch of chicken fence which will be going up in some of the more exposed and vunerable areas. Ive been pissing around the area, and will soon start saving it up in bottles for weekly spreading. Im going to be taking the dog hair and making satchels which I will be attaching to trees.

Deer are my biggest concern, as I cant take 5 steps without seeing a large pile of deer crap. There is also a whole army of squirrels, though I cannot be sure if they love the sweet, sweet herb or not. I assume the combonation of piss, fur, wire and a couple visits to the grow spot weekly should easily keep away any pesky animals.

Dog hair sweaters? On the real? Haha. The hair I have comes from a Siberian Husky, thatd be one uber warm and soft sweater.

i was just walking through a sporting-goods store and i saw they had "deer bait" basically food that deer love. they smell it... i guess. hunters use it to bring them to where they want. i guess.... you could put that stuff in the other direction far enough away to drive deer away, but still close enough to distract the deer from your plants....
also What other plant life is around your site? cuz if there's plenty of healthy greens for deer, they shouldnt even care if there's some pot "over there"

I just thought of something else.... im sure deer and other animals have sur-sonic hearing (meaning they can hear frequecies so high... we cant hear them) maybe there's like a battery-powered high-pitch amplifier. infact im sure there is something out there for that purpose. They make them for divers to keep sharks away... but thats underwater and sound travels very fast under the surface. maybe there's something to keep bears away...t hat would also work with foxes, coyote, squirles, and deer. sorry for multi-posting, but i just keep gettin ideas.

i happen to be out at one ofmy sites today, and i had to chase away a family of white-tail deer. i also found deer poop nearby a plant... and some other animal scat was within feet of the plant.

Get some predator urine. You can find it at a lot of Garden stores/Nurseries. I've gotten fox urine and it seemed to work decently.

I assume that the added wire and fencing as well as hair and human piss will be more then ample and nearly costless. The only thing which costs money is the wire, and its cheap enough that I am not worried about buying another roll or two.

Solved the hair problem, rather them get nylons im having a buddy who works at a restuarant and he is going to hook me up with a bunch of hair nets. Should work nicely.

A box of mothballs work just as good, put out a few every week or so and deer, rabbits and all the other MJ loving animals will avoid it like the plauge.
