First grow recap
Well, harvest day has come and gone and I believe now would be a good time for a recap of my first season as a grower. After various starts and stops I ended up with two female plants grown from different varieties of good commercial weed. One plant had all kinds of problems (mostly caused by me) ranging from reverting from flowering to veg, over fertilizing, bug infestation, mold, etc. The plant ended up about 3 ft tall, stunted, wilted, fert burned and ugly. The first picture is the poor bastard in late August. I did manage to get about ¾ of an ounce of small purple buds from it so it wasn’t a total loss. I harvested the bud in early October, the trichs were all over the board … clear, cloudy, amber, red, you name it! I dried for 10 days before putting it into a mason jar. I sampled it after 2 weeks … excellent hashy flavor, powerful hammer-to-the-forehead type stone.
The second plant came out much better … 5 ½ foot tall with 2 good sized colas. I believe that it is an indica dominant hybrid judging by the fat leaves and thick buds.
The second picture is from mid August. The third picture is in late September about 10 days prior to harvest. I also included a couple of bud shots.
At harvest the trichs were 90% cloudy and 10% amber …. I probably should have waited another week or 2 but the weather was rainy / cold, the leaves were turning blue, black, red, yellow, etc. and I had already had a couple of run-ins with mold. After harvest, it was dried for ten days and has been in jars for almost 3 weeks. After all was said and done I pulled about 3 ounces of fluffy buds off of this plant. I intend to sample this batch sometime next weekend.
Lessons learned by one rookie grower:
<O </O - Don’t germinate to early … I started the first plant indoors in February. When I moved it outside late April it started flowering, then went back into veg as the days got longer; really weirded out the plant.
- Easy on the ferts … nothing can damage a plant as quickly as over fertilizing. Start with 1/3 the recommended strength and gradually increase if necessary.
- Keep your crop mobile, plant in pots and use camouflage … nothing like being able to quickly bring your girls under cover when the weather gets nasty or a surprise guest shows up. Much to my wife’s dismay I was able to grow in my back yard and was never discovered by friends or neighbors.
- Be vigilante and proactive … it is easier to fight off the pests, mold, etc. the earlier that you discover them.
- Do a lot of research … GC is a great place to start but it is not the only place. That said, thanks alot guys and gals for all the help.
