Don't rub your hands on the plants/buds on purpose - that will decrease their quality significantly - let the finger hash happen naturally while you deal with your crop (there's no point to do this with purchased bud - use the cold water or screen method, or just buy hash). Wash your hands thoroughly before manicuring your crop and then proceed. You will soon notice that you have sticky fingers, and that there is brown residue on your trimming implements. Scrape this residue off (using your fingernail) once it builds up and set aside - be patient don't do it too early or too often, in fact do it only once the hash starts impeding your use of the trimmers (trichomes plus heat/friction equals hash).
When you're done your fingers will be sticky as all hell (hopefully you've not been touching things and getting them contaminated). Just sit there and rub your hands together and watch as little brown strings form. Keep going and eventually you'll get larger clumps. Set these aside along with the clumps from your trimmers and continue until it stops coming. When done, knead it all together like dough and get smokin.
If you have really dry hands it will be tough to rub the hash off; after washing your hands apply some moisturiser (sparingly! nobody wants to smoke moisturiser), wait for it to absorb (try not to get your hands dirty again in the mean time) and proceed.
